Lady Gaga Gets Serious In "Alejandro" Video - Video Ga Ga

We have such similar backgrounds, she and I,
but it took me so many years to overcome
the sexual repression of my catholic upbringing
and embrace the fullness of who I am.
I'm so proud of her. In every way.
I know most of you will never understand this.

Haha....I understand, beautiful. :hugehug:

This song sounds like a reworked Ace of Base song to me.

Almost every pop song in existence is little more than a simple reworked chord progression. That's not the point.
I put this thread is under sexuality, instead of music due to the video content anyway.

(Is Ace of Base something I might wanna' check out?)

(I don't even know Ace of Base. Are they something I might wanna' check out?)

All That She Wants? The Sign? You were alive in 1994, right? :p

Anyway, it's not just the chord progression, but the rhythm, melodic elements, types of breaks, sounds, and lyrical/vocal elements.

If you like cheesy synth-pop then check out Ace of Base, otherwise it's not necessary.

Ok. So either I do not know how to name or begin a thread
to evoke interest, or I guess the whole video is of no interest to anyone.
which kind of suprises me, as this is a religious forum.

Perhaps I should have named the thread
"nun eats rosary"
or
Is it art?..."upsidown cross on crotch"
or
"Controversial homosexual video by disgruntled catholic".

I knew I shouldn't have put Gaga's name in the thread title.

I may try this thread all over again by a more controversial title,
not mention Gaga.... and see what happens.

Or, I may not.

For many years I did not listen to the radio... or popular music at all.
I spent all my time either listening to/playing jazz,
or working on church music for the parish in which I worked as a pianist.
I missed literally decades of popular music.

I need this explained to me. :areyoucra

What's the video trying to say? And how does it link up with the song itself?

Although I'm tiring of the bump and grind in every video, I like Lady Gaga.

If you read the article linked in the OP,
that's a good place to start.
Then we can chat about it if you like. :D

Okay, got it.

RE the video itself: I love the opening scene, and I dig the military theme. I don't quite get the end where the guys are throwing her around.

I appreciate her inspiration for the video, and I can definitely identify with her feelings about the Catholic church.

So much of what she does reminds me of Madonna. I hope they do something together.

I totally understand you UV. I didn't like GaGa at first, but after taking a deeper look at her, she is one of my favorite artists, and I don't typically like mainstream/pop music. She is truly an artist, and someone able to fashion her will into existence. She is both mainstream and totally... not. She throws a monkey wrench in mainstream.

I love her play with sexuality. It is like she uses sexuality as part of her artistic medium. When she is half or completely naked, she isn't trying to be sexy. She is exploring sexuality in an artistic way, and sometimes in ways people are uncomfortable with, like in this video.

Here are the lyrics:

I know that we are young.
And I know you may love me.
But I just can't be with you like this anymore.
Alejandro.

She's got both hands
in her pockets.
And she wont look at you,
Won't look at you

She hides true love.
En su bolsillo
She's got a halo 'round her finger.
Around you.

You know that I love you boy.
Hot like Mexico, rejoice.
At this point I gotta choose,
nothing to loose.

Don't call my name.
Don't call my name, Alejandro.
I'm not your babe.
I'm not your babe, Fernando.

Don't wanna kiss, don't wanna touch.
Just smoke one cigarette and run.
Don't call my name.
Don't call my name, Roberto.

Alejandro.
Alejandro.
Ale-ale-jandro.
Ale-ale-jandro. [2x]

(Just stop. Please. Just let me go. Alejandro. Just let me go.)

She's not broken,
She's just a baby.
But her boyfriend's like a dad, just like a dad.
and all those flames that burned before him.
Now he's gonna fight your fight, gonna cool the bad.

You know that I love you boy.
Hot like Mexico, rejoice.
At this point I gotta choose,
nothing to loose

Don't call my name.
Don't call my name, Alejandro.
I'm not your babe.
I'm not your babe, Fernando.

Don't wanna kiss, don't wanna touch.
Just smoke my cigarette and hush.
Don't call my name.
Don't call my name, Roberto.

Alejandro.
Alejandro.
Ale-ale-jandro.
Ale-ale-jandro. [2x]

Don't bother me.
Don't bother me. Alejandro
Don't call my name.
Don't call my name, Fernando.

I'm not your babe.
I'm not your babe, Alejandro.

Don't wanna kiss, don't wanna touch. Fernando.
Don't call my name.
Don't call my name, Alejandro.
I'm not your babe.

Alejandro.

I found a really good explanation of it. Here is the quote:

unknown said:
"I think, actually, that this song was from the "Fear of Men Monster," which could also be tied in with "Fear of Sex Monster."

The song is about how she sees love based on a man's wallet (she hides true love en su bolsillo [Bolsillo is pocket in Spanish, which plays a large part in the song]). She then wraps men around her finger with her innocent act (She's got a halo round her finger, around you).

According to her Wiki page, the song also represents GaGa's fear of commitment to the point where she cannot even remember the name of her lover (exemplified in the multiple changing of names; "Alejandro," "Fernando," "Roberto"). Additionally, the line "Mexico, rejoice!" ties into the whole "What happens in Mexico, stays in Mexico" theme that is ever-popular among Spring-Breakers in Cancun.

So, basically, the song is about being promiscuous and garnering as much money as possible, then realizing how wrong it is: "I know that we are young, and I know that you may love me; but I just can't be with you like this anymore...Alejandro." By that time, however, "Alejandro" is already in love with the speaker as he calls her name and addresses her as "babe." Unfortunately for him, he has no idea that she never felt anything more for him than lust and financial assistance.

I know plenty of people like that, lol. "

It could also be seen as a goodbye to past lovers.

The symbolism in the video is crazy. It looks like it is set in Nazi Germany. The guys seem bisexual maybe...?? With hints at bdsm play? Then her latex priests robe suit with the upside down cross between her legs... wow.....

Here is what the director said about the religious symbolism:

"The religious symbolism is not meant to denote anything negative, but represents the character's battle between the dark forces of this world and the spiritual salvation of the Soul," Klein wrote. "Thus at the end of the film, she chooses to be a nun, and the reason her mouth and eyes disappear is because she is withdrawing her senses from the world of evil and going inward towards prayer and contemplation."

Klein added that the scene in which Gaga ingests the rosary beads is meant to represent "the desire to take in the holy."

What??!! Yeah right!!

If the inverted cross between her legs in the priest outfit isn't a symbol of the church perverting sexuality I don't know what is.

Eating the rosary, her face disappearing, and the sexual aspects of the guys... I dunno.

Oh, funky. Thanks for sharing that, Tigeress! I was wondering about the multiple name thing especially.

Whoops. I didn't read that article either. I was also going to say that in the video there are straight and gay acts, so i was going to say that it is symbolic of the two sexual identities being equal and the love scenario the song is based upon equally applying to both identities.

Anne, I think that the guys tossing her back and forth might be symbolic of peoples struggle with the church demonizing sexuality.

She said herself in that article that she is conflicted about her love for the church and her hate for the churches bullcrap.

The video was well done, I thought. I found myself grieving instead of celebratory. The song isn't my favorite, but her message I totally get. UV put this in the perfect forum.

I think a lot of us who are either out of the closet or still in it struggle with how to reconcile the possibility of losing (or already lost) our community. On the one hand a burden is lifted off our shoulders because we're no longer lying to ourselves, but on the other hand being socially ostracized and shunned is utterly painful, simply for who we are.

I also realized I think that her eating the rosary doen't look so symbolic of "taking in the holy," or whatever the director said. It would seem to me more like, "deep throating the holy." lol.
