Your Daughter Wants a Laptop. It Costs the Same as Would Enough Penicillin to Save 125 Lives.

Violet.
What if your daughter wants a very expensive lapdance?

Should she be expected to give that up
to feed 500 people for a week?

I mean, is it really her problem?

What I mean is that if money is so tight that you can buy your daughter a laptop but can't give to charity, then you probably can't afford the laptop - and I stand by that statement.

If your credit is good enough to finance a laptop, then you've got enough money to give some to charity. If you've got spare change enough to buy a laptop, you've got spare change enough to give to charity. There are very few situations I can think of in which you had the money for a laptop but truly didn't have any extra money to give to charity. I mean, I guess in theory you could come up with one - but I'm speaking generally.

There's hardly a person on this forum who couldn't give time, money, or items to charity.

WHAT if you CAN afford a LAPTOP for your daugther but thats all you have got?

it is possible Kathryn..

And besides that how would it ever be equal even if you can buy your daughter a laptop and on TOP of that afford to throw a couple of bottled waters out to the "poor" at the same time? It still wouldnt be equal.

And for the record I "give" to charity.Starting with my own family.

I wonder if not giving to charity is a sin?

When did giving to charity become a moral requirement?

Well we should help each other..

But its rediculous for someone to say "if you can afford a lapt-top to give your daughter to enhance her life well then you better have more to give to the others on top of that".

Thats like saying ..if I can "afford" to send my son to collegge it better be AFTER or in conjunction with beign able to afford to give money to other people for food and water and if Im broke I better go out and hump the pavement and work all night long or day in a homeless shelter to justify the fact I can send my child to school.

I thought we already paid taxes?

To remain consistant with the OP, recieving... obviously.

Well then she is a spoiled brat who needs to go out and serve the public for at least 20 hours of community service to repay society for the lap dance. It shouldnt be "free" for her to buy" without paying extra for the priveledge of being able to buy that.

Sigh. Dallas, I am not judging you. I am simply trying to answer your questions logically.

OK - IF you only have $500 in the bank, and you have the opportunity to buy a laptop for $500 - you've got a couple of options.

I'd start by saying that if you only have $500 in the bank, you probably shouldn't spend it on a laptop.

But - that's your choice. Say you really feel you need to buy that laptop and that's all the money you have - then I wonder, could you find a better deal on a used laptop? Could you then give the balance of the money to someone who desperately needs it to feed their family for a few days?

Or - could you buy the laptop and then set aside a few hours each week to do some volunteer work with your daughter in the community? Maybe helping with an adult literacy program - and maybe actually use that laptop in your volunteering?

Say you don't have any extra time - and no extra money either? Then the last thing you need to do is spend money on a laptop, when there are free computers at the public library. Sounds like your family has bigger problems than buying a teenager a laptop will fix.

A laptop is not a necessity. It's nice to have, but certainly not indespensible.

For the record, I wasn't saying or meaning to imply that you buy a laptop and then throw a couple of bottles of water at the poor. Good grief. In order to teach a child the true meaning of philanthropy, volunteering time or money must include self sacrifice. In fact, the example that I used was to figure out how much time the laptop was worth - probably at least 40 hours of work - and then you and your daughter could volunteer together somewhere to "earn those hours."

That's a far cry from throwing a couple of bottles of water to the poor.

Let me give you an example. When my kids were at home, we had a Christmas budget. I told them what I was spending on each of them (about $100 each). Then I would ask them to donate part of that $100 toward selecting a child from the local Angel Tree. It always amazed me at how much my kids would donate from their Christmas money. Then we would go down and pick some kids out - and my kids would spend their chosen amount towards those gifts. As they got older and began to earn money, we still continued this tradition and they added their own money to the mix.

That's the sort of example I am talking about setting.

Hmmm.
I wonder...
What is the going "charity rate"?
I mean, how many people am I required to help in order to by my daughter a new laptop?
And if I buy her a used laptop, does the "charity rate" still apply?
Or is there some sort of discount for recycling?

Well, what if I want a really expensive lap dance?:flirt:

Do I need to go out and do community service afterwards?

Is there a heavier charity service penalty
for some goods and services than others?

If its used you get a discounted charity volunteer rate.Or you can just go ahead and donate the money you saved having the avialbibility for a used laptop at your fingers to a "worthy charitable" organization.

Duh!

I wonder if they have a website, or a form or something with all these rates, exceptions, etc.?

Well how am I supposed to know?
Hells bells, it seems to me they are making it all up as they go along!

Well huh!

Are you kidding me?

Lap dances are a luxury ..And expensive ones are even more a luxury..

And what is "expensive"..isnt that relative"

O.K for every 100 pennies you spend on a lap dance you need to give at LEAST 10 pennies to the "poor".If you dont have the money ? Then you cant even afford a lap dance in the first place..got it honey?
