is religion dangerous?

Religion should be dangerous. If you can't cope, stop whining.

And why should religion be dangerous, Conor? Or is this just rhetoric and you really don't know or care why religion should be dangerous?

At times, religion can be very dangerous. Many religions are two edge swords that inspire some people to great acts of human decency and others to great acts of human indecency.

It seems to me a fanatic is someone who doesn't care who they hurt in their cause.
Nah; it's people that are dangerous.

Of course I care. Religion becomes corrupt, we all know that.

But @ its best, doing what its supposed to do, the transformative power of religion cannot be something taken easily. It should shake your convictions to the core, threaten every conviction and conceit you hold dearly, and rock your mind, body and soul to the extent that you are forced to submit, to give in: that's @ the core of all religious messages - accept your God's will, or your Karma, or whatever you want to call it. Submit.

So religion is dangerous because of what people are expected to give up to truly live a religious life. That few do genuinely is no reflection on religion, merely human weakness. Religion is an adult thing, for me anyway, so I do not agree to the indoctrination of children into religion, but that is precisely because it is so dangerous: religion can consolidate self-control over ones mind, or it can take it away. You don't want to be in the latter group.

As for all this whining about suicide bombers and such, that's a strawman argument as far as I'm concerned.

I'm beginning to think it's actually neither people nor religions by themselves, but the combination of fools with foolish doctrines that sometimes produces disastrous results.

I would start a religion with Random.

If you're trying to argue that religion causes violence, then this is easily proven false with just a quick look at history. Yes, Hitler was a Catholic, but he "only" killed about 21 million people, while Joseph Stalin and Mao Zedong were Atheists who killed 43 and 77 million people respectively. So am I saying that atheism causes violence? No. People will choose to do whatever evil things they want to do using whatever reasoning frees them of guilt, whether it be "God doesn't exist, therefore what I'm doing isn't wrong", "I'm doing this for God because he told me to do it", or something in between.

Based upon your posts, you don't seem to be doing much thinking either.

Still he has a point, religion's stance is accept God the way we do or die. Religion is dangerous as it has almost as much influence as politicians do. I'd personally trust politicians with my life over fanatics who prance around in robes all day.

Religion really isn't a problem. Many wars and horrific events have been done in the name of religion, but alot of bad has been done without religion being involved. People will always find something to fight and bully others over. Telling people God said to go to war makes it easier to make the actions seem justified.

As I already said, history shows that more people die at the hands of atheists than theists. And also, as I already said, the common denominator for most violent crimes is a person's own selfish desires, not their religious beliefs (or lack of). As for me, I wouldn't trust politicians or robe-prancing fanatics.

What about the very harsh times when countless of innocent people were tried, tortured, and killed for being witches? All in the name of Christianity.

Thats stupid. Where do Buddhism, Hinduism, Jainism, Sikhism EVER say this anywhere?
