Standing up for developers: youtube-dl is back - The GitHub Blog

As of November 2020 the project is back reversing the RIAA takedown notice which forced it out of service for a time. We had a thread about it before: RIAA finally asserts monopoly control over youtube content.

It appears, for now, that it is legal in USA to download for your own use publicly shown videos as long as you aren't circumventing copyright infringement measures and aren't otherwise breaking copyright. Its analogous to recording music from radio stations or using a DVR on your cable box.

Its a good small step in the right direction. We need to reduce corporate influence over such things even more.
Like, record companies having death grips over the rights over music made by artists who are dead. And record company ownership over artist's songs. They didn't write the music, thus the band should have ownership.
