Why was the first born son of Hindu families made a Sikh?

This is one thing that makes my mind boggle:

1. Hindus are polytheists or atheists; Sikhs are monotheists
2. Hindus believe in Sagun while Sikhs believe in Nirguni
3. Hindus have a caste system, Sikhs do not
4. Hindus have Vedas, Upanishads, Mahabharat and Ramayan while Sikhs have Guru Granth Sahib

Why was the first born made a Sikh?

They were not/still are not two different religions for many people. My grocer is a Hindu first born made Sikh (age 45 or so).
