Someone asked an interesting question: who prescribes Fentanyl and other deadly recreational drugs and why do they get away with it? All the time people are hospitalized as a result of OD'ing on Fentanyl and other deadly recreational drugs, involved in accidents or otherwise. A good question would be to find out who is writing the prescription. If it be doctors or similar health professionals do they take to time to make a reasoned diagnosis? Do they stick to limits to ensure that the drugs are not dealt?

Or are pharmacists sometimes illicitly writing the scrips? I think this epidemic would come to a grinding halt with a few well-publicized arrests; people in white coats trading them for pin stripes.

Fentanyl is a potent synthetic opioid drug approved by the Food and Drug Administration for use as an analgesic (pain relief) and anesthetic.
You can only legally obtain it with a prescription.
I am unaware that pharmacists can write scripts.
At least in the USA.

There are two types of fentanyl: pharmaceutical fentanyl and illegally made fentanyl.
...
Illegally made fentanyl (IMF) is available on the drug market in different forms, including liquid and powder1.
Powdered fentanyl looks just like many other drugs. It is commonly mixed with drugs like heroin, cocaine, and methamphetamine and made into pills that are made to resemble other prescription opioids. Fentanyl-laced drugs are extremely dangerous, and many people may be unaware that their drugs are laced with fentanyl.
In its liquid form, IMF can be found in nasal sprays, eye drops, and dropped onto paper or small candies.

It seems to me that the majority of the Fentanyl problem comes from this (illegally made) side.

Much of it is purchased on the "dark web." There are also those it's legitimately prescribed to that will sell it on the street due to it's value, which is roughly $1400/gm.

As technology continues to advance, the illicit drug trade advances with it. Unlike in years past, the vast majority of wholesale drug transactions involving fentanyl are online. Utilizing “dark web” drug markets, drug dealers are able to purchase large quantities of fentanyl directly from international manufacturers and have it shipped directly to themselves.
