What is sin?

Wikipedia defines "sin" as "the act of violating God's will," "as anything that violates the ideal relationship between an individual and God; or as any diversion from the perceived ideal order for human living," and as "missing the mark."

"Sin is the idea you are alone and separated off from what is whole." - A Course in Miracles
I think that definition is pretty good. This is a definition from "insight on the Scriptures": "Anything not in harmony with, hence contrary to, God’s personality, standards, ways, and will; anything marring one’s relationship with God. It may be in word (Job 2:10; Ps 39:1), in deed (doing wrong acts [Le 20:20; 2Co 12:21] or failing to do what should be done [Nu 9:13; Jas 4:17]), or in mind or heart attitude (Pr 21:4; compare also Ro 3:9-18"

Yes, “missing the mark”. It is an archery term. Imagine God as the target, you as the archer and the arrow as the journey or path to God. Anything that causes one to go astray or wander is sin. It is the turning away from God.

13 The Lord’s anger burned against Israel and he made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until the whole generation of those who had done evil in his sight was gone.

14 “And here you are, a brood of sinners, standing in the place of your fathers and making the Lord even more angry with Israel.

15 If you turn away from following him, he will again leave all this people in the wilderness, and you will be the cause of their destruction."(Numbers 32:13-15)

Well-stated.

Sin is allowing evil to influence your karma.
Evil thoughts can be controlled, but to sin is to let these thoughts influence your karma.
To gain pleasure temporary, and suffer afterwards, and keep doing that while knowing its wrong.

Sin is always linked to desire.
Without desire there would be no sin.
Without desire there would be no suffering.

The seven deadly sins are greed.
Because you have to always watch your back and people, distrusting honest folk perhaps (Suffering)
And you do all in your might to gain that extra loot, even go as far as to steal and lie. (Sin)

Lust,
Because you always desire that feeling once more, yet it shall always dissapoint unless you forget it. (Suffering)
You'll hurt others perhaps and lie and cheat, but that loving feeling you will never get (Sin)

Envy,
The mind is roaming with the things you desire, and you see others that have it wish they had not (Suffering)
You break their possessions or steal it and keep it, your mind is material and no longer with God (Sin)

Sloth,
You do your things, but you do not want to. You keep telling yourself i don't want this (Suffering)
You avoid responsibilities in order to do what you like, and troubles will pile up to your throat (Sin)

Wrath,
You wish harm upon others, but you only hurt yourself. You drink poison and wish others would die (Suffering)
You cause harm to others, and wish to harm once again, for you hate and hate and hate and you sin (Sin)

Pride,
You carry pride, and feel better than other's, you act like the devil and thus it shall target you (Suffering)
The ego is strong and you no longer share, enjoying is no longer a thing you can do.
