There is an oil field off the shore of Vietnam and a Russian oil company signed a contract to help develop that oil. China sent a threatening and official notice to both to cease business as China claims that is China's oil. Vietnam has allowed Russia to build a large airbase in their country. .Russia does not want to be told which nations they can do business with nor do they want to ask China permission to travel in the South China Sea with the future possibility of being cut off from it. Russia also sees China as a land grabbing nation and does not want China to become even more powerful than they already are.
India is showing interest in supporting Russia, buying oil from them and one reason is China is a major threat to India over the ownership of water and borderland.
That oil will travel through the South China Sea and Russia would never want China to destroy their profit margin with heavy taxation for the privilege of using the South China Sea trade routes.
