New kingdom was into the fertile crescent. I am betting that was why it was so important to the Egyptian population and why a migration north (ahkenatan period). Hence an exodus from thebes to what many claimed as a promised land.

No idea about Joseph bones, i never observed burial sites or keeping of bones as relevant nor important.
