Lots of stuff has already been mentioned, so I'll just add these few:

70s Progressive:
  • Gentle Giant
  • Jethro Tull
  • early Yes
Jazz (big band)
  • older stuff - who can resist Glenn Miller?
  • modern stuff -- Akiyoshi Tabackin Band (a Japanese/Polish couple run this - it's jazz with a Japanese twist)
More folk revival
  • Steeleye Span (UK folk/rock fusion sort of thing)
  • Cherish the Ladies (Celtic)
"Classical"
Wow...there's so much to this I wouldn't know where to start, but some particular recommends:

Renaissance/Baroque:
  • Any antiphonal brass choir stuff by Gabrieli (either Giovanni or Antoni, though I prefer "dad" Giovanni)
  • Harpsichord works of George Telemann, though really anything by him is good
  • The organ works of John Blow (a.k.a. "Jo Blow" no kiddin!)
  • Anything by Pachelbel *except* that stupid canon you hear all over the place aargh!
  • Bach Brandenberg Concertos, esp. 2,4 and 5
  • Handel esp. "Water Music" or any oratorio (you've heard of The Messiah, I'm sure :))
"Classical"
Mozart "Jupiter" Symphony and "Magic Flute" -- well really just *anything* by Mozart.
Beethoven's 6th "Pastoral" Symphony, any piano concerto, or chamber music really

Oratorio or choral works:
Mozart's "Requiem" (You hear the "Dies Irae" at the beginning of X-Men 2)
Brahm's "Ein Deutches Requiem" (A German Requiem)
Beethoven's 9th Symphony (last movement has the choir, but it's all good)
Mendelsohn's "Elijah"

Romantic:
Berlioz "Symphony Fantastique" (my next to all time fave)
Resphigi "Pines of Rome" (great brass parts too!)

More modern stuff:
Stravinsky "Rite of Spring" (my all time fave)
Dvorak "New World Symphony"
Sibelius "Finlandia"
Gershwin "Rhapsody in Blue"
Aaron Copland

sheesh, I could go on with this part for days, but these are the more easily found and well worth listening to things I can think of off the top of my head. Get Sojourner to add to it.

Oh yeah!
*Comedic music*
Spike Jones
PDQ Bach (Sojourner's avatar), esp. "Hansel & Gretel & Ted & Alice"

Ever hear a band called UB-40? I picked up some vinyl of theirs back in '80 or '81 when I was in the UK. I rather liked them. Not on Marley's level, but still decent. I don't know if their stuff ever made it to the U.S.

In honor of Booko, I am now jamming RED RED WINE by UB-40! Great band with a handful of great songs.... YES, they made the USA! I remember them and tracked down a CD to jam this song in particular. Tonight it plays for the chicken-lady and is recommended to the soup-lady!

"Red, red wine! Goes to my head! Makes me forget that I, am stealing your soul!
Red, red wine! It's up to you!.....

Red, red wine! Stay close to me! Don't let me be alone!

Red, red wine, you make me feel so fine; you keep me rockin all of the time."

Check em out, good band.
