The Lyrics to One of Your Favourite Songs

Citizen Mod
Dear god,
Hope you got the letter,
And I pray you can make it better down here.
I don’t mean a big reduction in the price of beer,
But all the people that you made in your image,
See them starving on their feet,
’cause they don’t get enough to eat

From god,
I can’t believe in you.

Dear god,
Sorry to disturb you,
But I feel that I should be heard loud and clear.
We all need a big reduction in amount of tears,
And all the people that you made in your image,
See them fighting in the street,
’cause they can’t make opinions meet,
About god,
I can’t believe in you.

Did you make disease, and the diamond blue?
Did you make mankind after we made you?
And the devil too!

Dear god,
Don’t know if you noticed,
But your name is on a lot of quotes in this book.
Us crazy humans wrote it, you should take a look,
And all the people that you made in your image,
Still believing that junk is true.
Well I know it ain’t and so do you,
Dear god,
I can’t believe in,
I don’t believe in,

I won’t believe in heaven and hell.
No saints, no sinners,
No devil as well.
No pearly gates, no thorny crown.
You’re always letting us humans down.
The wars you bring, the babes you drown.
Those lost at sea and never found,
And it’s the same the whole world ’round.
The hurt I see helps to compound,
That the father, son and holy ghost,
Is just somebody’s unholy hoax,
And if you’re up there you’ll perceive,
That my heart’s here upon my sleeve.
If there’s one thing I don’t believe in...

It’s you,
Dear god.

Respect Yourself
Staple Singers
If you disrespect anybody that you run in to
How in the world do you think anybody's s'posed to respect you
If you don't give a heck 'bout the man with the bible in his hand
Just get out the way, and let the gentleman do his thing
You the kind of gentleman that want everything your way
Take the sheet off your face, boy, it's a brand new day

Respect yourself, respect yourself
If you don't respect yourself
Ain't nobody gonna give a good cahoot, na na na na
Respect yourself, respect yourself

If you're walking 'round think'n that the world owes you something cause
You're here you goin' out the world backwards like you did when you
Put your hand on your mouth when you cough, that'll help the solution
Oh, you cuss around women and you don't even know their names and you
Dumb enough to think that'll make you a big ol man

Jaymes

The cake is a lie
To me, songs that tell stories are the best kind out there. :)

Kathy Mar - Fox Woman

Mother falls on the mountain stair,
Wild marauders footsteps fill the air.
Fox appears, drawn by moans and sighs,
Reaching in despair the mother cries:

"Fox-woman, sister, we are one.
Give me vengeance though my life is done.
Fox-woman, sister, name your fee.
Grant that I may strike my enemy"

Rebels stare silent at the fox,
As the wild beast chained in them unlocks.
Killers flee, fighting hard and wild
As fox-woman guards the one with child.

Temple priest takes the mother in,
Tells her that the vengeance will begin.
Though she knows she must pay with death,
Mother whispers with each passing breath:

"Fox-woman, sister, we are one.
Give me vengeance though my life is done.
Fox-woman, sister, name your fee.
Grant that I may strike my enemy"

Soft she comes to the temple door,
Russet pelt, a shadow near the floor.
Deep the drums in her gentle heart,
Keep the rhythm as the birth pains start.

Russet gown, hem of snowy white.
Now a woman steps into the light,
Makes her way to the bed of pain.
Reaches down with touch as soft as rain.

As her touch melts into the flesh,
Pain departs as fox and mother mesh.
Screaming ends with one quiet breath,
As the mother gives herself to death.

And the priest raises up the knife,
Carves a door to bring the child to life.
Infant born still without a sound,
Fox and human spirits have been bound.

"Fox-woman, sister, we are one.
Give me vengeance though my life is done.
Fox-woman, sister, name your fee.
Grant that I may strike my enemy"

Killers come seeking for the child,
Turned away by visions strong and wild.
As they flee down the mountain stair,
Vengeance, on fox footsteps, leaves her lair.

The way the last lines are sung is absolutely haunting... I love it. :D

Punk Rock Song--

have you been to the desert?
have you walked with the dead?
there's a hundred thousand children being killed for their bread
and the figures don't lie they speak of human disease
but we do what we want and we think what we please
have you lived the experience?
have you witnessed the plague?
people making babies sometimes just to escape
in this land of competition the compassion is gone
yet we ignore the needy and we keep pushing on
we keep pushing on
this is just a punk rock song
written for the people who can see something's wrong
like ants in a colony we do our share
but there's so many other ****in' insects out there
and this is just a punk rock song
(like workers in a company we do our share
but there's so many other ****in' robots out there)
have you visited the quagmire?
have you swam in the ****?
the party conventions and the real politic
the faces always different, the rhetoric the same
but we swallow it, and we see nothing change
nothing has changed...
10 million dollars on a losing campaign
20 million starving and writhing in pain
big strong people unwilling to give
small in vision and perspective
one in five kids below the poverty line
one population runnin' out of time

--The Universal Cynic--

catch a shooting star
and put it in your pocket
then your skin will start on fire
one bird in the hand,
or two birds in the bush
neither do you any good,
when you're stuck in the quagmire
show everyone you're not sure that they're telling he truth
then you can be known as the universal cynic too
benefit your fellow man
with good deeds for the day
and you'll serve your life away
pennies saved today
are pennies still tomorrow
strewn upon the desk,
piled up in the paper weight
show everyone you're not sure that they're telling the truth
then you'll be known as the universal cynic too
wipe your opaque eyes
and restore your crystal vision
turn another cheek and exalt in your decision
a bit of exercise for the universal cynic in you
early to bed, and early to rise
precludes you from seeing the most brilliant starry nights
sticks and stones can break bones,
words can't really hurt
unless you carry guns,
and are hungry for a fight
challenging the standards,
or questioning the stablished rules
trying to understand how they can benefit you
showing everyone you're not sure that they're telling the truth
just a bit of exercise for the universal cynic in you

<A name=3>--The Dodo--

I see a white haired man,
he's got a suit on and
he's telling people how they're supposed to live
nobody's listening to the politician
no matter what sage advice he has to give
he's got a clumsy, outdated m.o.
and he's come to a fork in the road
as we watch our foundations erode
there is only one direction to go
it's the way of the dodo
such a noble destiny
it's the waltz of desperation
passed along to you and me
the way of the dodo
(it's the gray stuff in your head)
(it's the pulse of the living and the voices of the dead)

Robtex writes: Great pick Patrick. Andy Partridge, lead singer of XTC is an atheist.
I don't know if you are familiar with Sarah McLachlan but she does a beautiful version of it on their tribute album.

Only one word

Deep down inside me
So close to my heart
There lies a rumour
That tears us apart
Deep down inside me
So close to my soul
Unspoken secrets
Betraying us all
Time goes by so slow
Since you had to go
Only one word
Can define the feeling
That bridges between
You and me
Only one sound
Can express the meaning
That lasts until we........
As I close my eyes
I think of the past
My fate awaits me
The die has been cast
Deep down inside me
Where dreams come alive
With you beside me
I'll always survive
Time goes by so slow
Since you had to go
Only one word
Can define the feeling
That bridges between
You and me
Only one sound
Can express the meaning
That lasts until we meet
Only one word
Only one word
Can define the feeling
That bridges between
You and me
Only one sound
Can express the meaning
That lasts until we meet
Only one word

This is a song I used to listen to all the time...some a'capella group - I thnk it was The Flying Pickets - did a cover of it and it was spectacular.

Masters of War - Bob Dylan

Come you masters of war
You that build all the guns
You that build the death planes
You that build the big bombs
You that hide behind walls
You that hide behind desks
I just want you to know
I can see through your masks

You that never done nothin'
But build to destroy
You play with my world
Like it's your little toy
You put a gun in my hand
And you hide from my eyes
And you turn and run farther
When the fast bullets fly

Like Judas of old
You lie and deceive
A world war can be won
You want me to believe
But I see through your eyes
And I see through your brain
Like I see through the water
That runs down my drain

You fasten the triggers
For the others to fire
Then you set back and watch
When the death count gets higher
You hide in your mansion
As young people's blood
Flows out of their bodies
And is buried in the mud

You've thrown the worst fear
That can ever be hurled
Fear to bring children
Into the world
For threatening my baby
Unborn and unnamed
You ain't worth the blood
That runs in your veins

How much do I know
To talk out of turn
You might say that I'm young
You might say I'm unlearned
But there's one thing I know
Though I'm younger than you
Even Jesus would never
Forgive what you do

Let me ask you one question
Is your money that good
Will it buy you forgiveness
Do you think that it could
I think you will find
When your death takes its toll
All the money you made
Will never buy back your soul

And I hope that you die
And your death'll come soon
I will follow your casket
In the pale afternoon
And I'll watch while you're lowered
Down to your deathbed
And I'll stand o'er your grave
'Til I'm sure that you're dead

The Saga of Jenny - Danny Kaye

Jenny made her mind up when she was three

She herself was going to trim the Christmas tree

Christmas Eve she lit the candles, tossed the tapers away

Little Jenny was an orphan on Christmas day

Poor Jenny, bright as a penny

Her equal would be hard to find

She lost one dad and mother, a sister and a brother,

But she would make up her mind

Jenny made her mind up when she was twelve

That into foreign languages she would delve

But at seventeen to Vassar, it was quite a blow

That in twenty-seven languages she couldn't say no

Poor Jenny, bright as a penny

Her equal would be hard to find

To Jenny I'm beholden, her heart was big and golden

But she would make up her mind

Jenny made her mind up at twenty-two

To get herself a husband was the thing to do

She got herself all dolled up in her satins and furs

And she got herself a husband--but he wasn't hers

Poor Jenny, bright as a penny

Her equal would be hard to find

Deserved a bed of roses, but history discloses

That she would make up her mind

Jenny made her mind up at fifty-one

She would write her memoirs before she was done

The very day her book was published, history relates,

There were wives who shot their husbands in some thirty-three states

Jenny made her mind up at seventy-five

She would live to be the oldest woman alive

But gin and rum and destiny play funny tricks,

And poor Jenny kicked the bucket at seventy-six

Jenny points a moral with which you cannot quarrel,

Makes a lot of common sense--

Jenny and her saga prove that you're gaga

If you don't keep sitting on the fence

Jenny and her story point the way to glory

To all man and womankind

Anyone with vision comes to this decision--

Don't make up your mind

I love Danny Kaye!!!:jiggy:

The road is long
With many a winding turn
That leads us to who knows where
Who knows when
But I'm strong
Strong enough to carry him
He ain't heavy, he's my brother

So on we go
His welfare is of my concern
No burden is he to bear
We'll get there
For I know
He would not encumber me
He ain't heavy, he's my brother

If I'm laden at all
I'm laden with sadness
That everyone's heart
Isn't filled with the gladness
Of love for one another

It's a long, long road
From which there is no return
While we're on the way to there
Why not share
And the load
Doesn't weigh me down at all
He ain't heavy, he's my brother

He's my brother
He ain't heavy, he's my brother...

And also

Rows and floes of angel hair
And ice cream castles in the air
And feather canyons ev’rywhere
I’ve looked at clouds that way

But now they only block the sun
They rain and snow on ev’ryone
So many things I would have done
But clouds got in my way
I’ve looked at clouds from both sides now
From up and down, and still somehow
It’s cloud illusions I recall
I really don’t know clouds at all

Moons and junes and ferris wheels
The dizzy dancing way you feel
As ev’ry fairy tale comes real
I’ve looked at love that way

But now it’s just another show
You leave ’em laughing when you go
And if you care, don’t let them know
Don’t give yourself away

I’ve looked at love from both sides now
From give and take, and still somehow
It’s love’s illusions I recall
I really don’t know love at all

Tears and fears and feeling proud
To say I love you right out loud
Dreams and schemes and circus crowds
I’ve looked at life that way

But now old friends are acting strange
They shake their heads, they say I’ve changed
Well something’s lost, but something’s gained
In living ev’ry day

I’ve looked at life from both sides now
From win and lose and still somehow
It’s life’s illusions I recall
I really don’t know life at all
I’ve looked at life from both sides now
From up and down, and still somehow
It’s life’s illusions I recall
I really don’t know life at all

LIGHT ONE CANDLE

Light one candle for the maccabee children
With thanks that their light didn’t die

This one caught my eye because we named our youngest son, Parker Maccabee.

What is this song from, Deut?

Scout Wetspers
Tune: Scout Vespers (Oh, Tannenbaum)

Softly falls the rain today
As our campfire floats away.
Silently, each Scout should ask
"Did I bring my SCUBA mask?
Have I tied my tent flaps down?
Learned to swim, so I won't drown?
Have I done, and will I try
Everything to keep me dry?"
ROFL....this sounds like the first camping trip I ever took my girl scouts on.

Sunshine on My Shoulders
John Denver
Sunshine on my shoulders makes me happy
Sunshine in my eyes can make me cry
Sunshine on the water looks so lovely
Sunshine almost always makes me high

If I had a day that I could give you
I’d give to you a day just like today
If I had a song that I could sing for you
I’d sing a song to make you feel this way

Sunshine on my shoulders makes me happy
Sunshine in my eyes can make me cry
Sunshine on the water looks so lovely
Sunshine almost always makes me high

If I had a tale that I could tell you
I’d tell a tale sure to make you smile
If I had a wish that I could wish for you
I’d make a wish for sunshine all the while

Sunshine on my shoulders makes me happy
Sunshine in my eyes can make me cry
Sunshine on the water looks so lovely
Sunshine almost always makes me high
Sunshine almost all the time makes me high
Sunshine almost always

For Baby
John Denver
I’ll walk in the rain by your side
I’ll cling to the warmth of your hand
I’ll do anything to keep you satisfied
I’ll love you more than anybody can

And the wind will whisper your name to me
Little birds will sing along in time
Leaves will bow down when you walk by
And morning bells will chime

I’ll be there when you’re feelin’ down
To kiss away the fears if you cry
I’ll share with you all the happiness I’ve found
A reflection of the love in your eyes

And I’ll sing you the songs of the rainbow
A whisper of the joy that is mine
And leaves will bow down when you walk by
And morning bells will chime

I’ll walk in the rain by your side
I’ll cling to the warmth of your tiny hand
I’ll do anything to help you understand
And I’ll love you more than anybody can

And the wind will whisper your name to me
Little birds will sing along in time
Leaves will bow down when you walk by
And morning bells will chime

Hey Netdoc,
A girl I once knew 'introduced me ' to John Denver; unfortunately she died in a plane crash at the age of 25ish (she went to Australia and took a plane to 'look over' New Zealand). She was alovely girl, and I get tears in my eyes whenever I think of her; strangely enough I remember her mostly for two main reasons - one when she shamed me because I laughed at the thought of one of her friends(a lad my age who was a model train fan); I felt ashamed at my own attitude towards what is after all a completely innocent hobby.
The other is when she taught me how to make elderflower champagne (her name for it)- it was a lovely drink made out of the flowers, without any yeast.

Anyway, my wife reminded me of this Christmas Carol that I simply adore; I think it probably is my favourite of all the music that I sing to; the first time I heard it sung I knew that it was ' for me'

Oh holy night!
The stars are brightly shining
It is the night of the dear Savior's birth!
Long lay the world in sin and error pining
Till he appear'd and the soul felt its worth.
A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn!

Fall on your knees
Oh hear the angel voices
Oh night divine
Oh night when Christ was born
Oh night divine
Oh night divine

Led by the light of Faith serenely beaming
With glowing hearts by His cradle we stand
So led by light of a star sweetly gleaming
Here come the wise men from Orient land
The King of Kings lay thus in lowly manger
In all our trials born to be our friend.

Truly He taught us to love one another
His law is love and His gospel is peace
Chains shall He break for the slave is our brother
And in His name all oppression shall cease
Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we,
Let all within us praise His holy name.
Words by Chappeau de Roquemaure
Translated by John S. Dwight

John Denver was one of my favorites. Here is another that has really got me thinking as of late:

The Logical Song - Supertramp

When I was young, it seemed that life was so wonderful,
a miracle, oh it was beautiful, magical.
And all the birds in the trees, well they'd be singing so happily,
joyfully, playfully watching me.
But then they send me away to teach me how to be sensible,
logical, responsible, practical.
And they showed me a world where I could be so dependable,
clinical, intellectual, cynical.

There are times when all the world's asleep,
The questions run too deep for such a simple man
Won't you please, please tell me what we've learned
I know it sounds absurd but please tell me who I am

Now watch what you say or they'll be calling you a radical,
liberal, fanatical, criminal.
Won't you sign up your name, we'd like to feel you're
acceptable, respectable, presentable, a vegetable!
At night, when all the world's asleep,
The questions run so deep for such a simple man
Won't you please, please tell me what we've learned
I know it sounds absurd but please tell me who I am

Now I know why I love you all. Your choice of songs left me breathless, teary, joyful, sad, and filled with good memories.

Sometimes without the music behind it, the words of a song make a bigger impact. Thank you my dear friends for the old memories and the new pleasures of the beauty we call music.
Joyfully,
Martha
