Christian Right Poised for Political Armageddon
http://www.religionnews.com/index.html
By Kevin Eckstrom and Adelle Banks
WASHINGTON -- The Rev. Jerry Falwell had been waiting 25 years for Friday (July 1), when religious conservatives would finally have a Supreme Court opening with a Republican president and Congress in office. I think this is do or die, said Falwell, adding that if religious conservatives can't get their way in this battle, they will ultimately fail. The retirement of Justice Sandra Day O'Connor is a chance to finally change their fortunes in the nation's highest court, sparking the end of liberal activist judges. At the same time, a progressive faith community will have a chance to build on recent momentum to steer the courts on a more moderate path. For political activists in a myriad of religious organizations, this is Armageddon, a battle for the soul of the Supreme Court.
