standby mode?

I have a set top box which I use to watch TV

When I'm not using it I put it into standby mode

But does this actually reduce the electricity it uses or is it just a gimmick?

Standby saves between 60% to 90% of the electricity used if it is left fully powered up. Better still to turn it off

A lot of set-top boxes are pretty power-efficient anyways, but basically yes, it does save electricity.
