South Sudan Lets Fighters Rape Women Instead of Paying Salaries

This is an example of the ugliness of the Ancient World. I love the beauty of the Ancient World but this is horrible. Also this is a good reminder to pay close attention to new Nations. I do not know if properly supporting them would have stopped this but if a nation is isolated then they are accountable to no international pressure.

Dear lord...

Interesting that this or Boko Haram will never see mainstream news coverage or significant international aid, but everyone's got their fingers in the ISIS pie. =/

Besides the brutality of it, it is a rather good tactic.
ISIS will torture people in the streets, cartels will do similar, but nothing really strikes fear into the people like the public rape of your family members.
It's not just you that's on the line, it's not just death you have to deal with, getting your mind broke gets added on top of that.
The thought of that alone would scare people away en masse.

It still has its flaws, you could easily throw an STD into the mix and there goes a lot of soldiers (I doubt they use protection).
There's also various viruses and chemical radiation, there are plenty of new ways to stop it.
The old ways would have been public castration, perhaps with a side of dogs feasting on your lower parts.
Either way works really, I wonder what will be done... if anything at all.

The thing about using fear as a tactic, the Mexican Drug Cartel: Knight's Templar found this out the hard way, is sooner than you would like you make things so bad that people will feel like they have nothing left to lose and then fight back. The best way to maintain control is to use love on your people and allies and fear with your enemies. But that makes sense and therefore few nations will do it.

That might fly with an inplace gang or regime, but we're talking a war here.
The worst the potential victims can do is join the other side or move in this situation.
There's no way they could create a large enough force to fight a military off, if they tried it would lead to their demise.

Your logic is good, but it doesn't account for every situation.
I'm no strategos or anything, but I do understand violence and all the loopholes to perform or get around it.
The best option these people have is moving, nothing heart warming like a peace ceremony to end the war is going to happen anytime soon.

Vietnam. The USO hit them with everything except nuclear weapons and what were they? Rice Farmers and prostitutes with AK's, a few MiG's and oh yeah the element of surprise. Not to mention the ordinary people. South Sudan is a third world nation. If people wanted to get weapons to strike back they could. And we will see that soon enough. However when what does happen South Sudan will still have it's problems.

The US didn't systematically rape and torture the Vietnamese people in front of their families.
They were essentially standing up to bullies, not to the psycho kid who brought a weapon storage of guns to school and let bullets fly.

Your right not in front of their families.

Right because the Vietnamese people shouldn't have had a nation. The south Vietnamese was corrupt oppressive and denied freedom of Religion. Bet you are going to say: "No that was the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. Because freedom."

I was specific for a reason.

I wont say that, I care very little for the situation in Vietnam as it is something of a repeated story.
The only reason I know what I know currently about it is due to my grandfather, a marksman during the war then.
