Satan, His Purpose

"Facts" as gleaned from Christian theologies

1) Satan does a lot of bad things to people.
2) Satan makes people do a lot of bad things.
3) God allows Satan to stick around.

So what purpose do all these serve?

Resist the devil, and the devil will be your friend. A devil is not an atheist; he does not doubt God. The faith which he lacks is faith in man.

And the act of sacred magic with respect to such a devil is that of re-establishing his faith in man. The purpose of the trials of Job was not to dispel the doubts of God, but rather those of the devil.

1) Satan does a lot of bad things to people.
It's his job to take the blame when bad things happen to people. Otherwise Someone Else would have to.
2) Satan makes people do a lot of bad things.
It's his job to take the blame when we do bad things to people. Otherwise we'd have to.
3) God allows Satan to stick around.
God has thoughtfully provided this elaboration of the scapegoat tradition because it suits everyone.

not sure if Satan ....had....a purpose

was He not God's Favored?
at that point of existence He would hardly be anyone's scapegoat

Keeper of the Light.....was the title

after creating Man.....God dealt a change in the job description
Seek after him.....he is fragile
Make certain he not dash his toe, nor his head

so......God's Favored went from .....Right Hand ......
all the way down to Keeper of the filthy talking monkey

I can see the cause for the rebellion

I really wonder why. Especially after having deceived so many by leading them to believe that meek Jesus is a third of the blood thirsty God of the OT. Or that God has a son at all.

Of course, that did not convince the real witnesses close to scene where all this unfolded (the Jews), but it was pretty good nonetheless. He is the master deceiver, after all, and that might be his masterpiece.

A simple awe inspiring lie, and billions are damned. How cool is that?

You can't have a savior demigod without a bad guy evil character for him/her to defeat.
The initial good vs evil trope had to have an evil character. This seemed to start with Zrorastrinism religion in Persia. Persia invaded Judea and they borrowed the concepts. After the invasion is when we start to see elements of good vs evil in the OT. As well as an afterlife. Zors also had an afterlife the followers could go to. After Persia left Judaism had all sorts of new material.

I think belief in a literal satan influencing our actions is a cop out for those who do not wish to take responsibility for their actions.

It’s convenient to blame so much on a mythical demon but it is a sign of true maturity to accept full responsibility for our own actions.
