Tafseer books mention this sis, fvm. There are many stories and most probably they are inaccurate. As I said before no need to confuse ourselves with them.

You learn something everyday huh?! Well as you said there are many stories, most probably inaccurate. Neither Quran nor hadith as far as know (which isn't all that far) is not specific about the step-by-step of that event. Only thing Quran says about it is limited to the verse, but beyond that it does not speak. So many can speculate about it, but there is no consensus on the issue, so it is not obligatory to believe one thing or another.
