Only- Begotten Son

The apostle John repeatedly describes the Lord Jesus Christ as the only-begotten Son of God. (Joh 1:14; 3:16, 18; 1Jo 4:9) This is not in reference to his human birth or to him as just the man Jesus. As the Lo´gos, or Word, "this one was in the beginning with God," even "before the world was." (Joh 1:1, 2; 17:5, 24) At that time while in his prehuman state of existence, he is described as the "only-begotten Son" whom his Father sent "into the world."—1Jo 4:9.

The KJV bible uses begotten in 1 John 4:9 but you will find that the word (begotten) was added by the KJ translators, other versions don't say begotten.

-- Revised Standard
1 John 4:9 In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him.

-- New Jerusalem with Apocrypha
1 John 4:9 This is the revelation of God's love for us, that God sent his only Son into the world that we might have life through him.

-- New American with Apocrypha
1 John 4:9 In this way the love of God was revealed to us: God sent his only Son into the world so that we might have life through him.

-- New Revised Standard with Apocrypha
1 John 4:9 God's love was revealed among us in this way: God sent his only Son into the world so that we might live through him.

We know that God has many sons but this one Son is unique in that He is God's chief messenger and the first of God's creation.

When the bible speaks of Jesus' begottenness it is referring to His resurrection form the dead. Psalms 2:7 gives us a prophecy of Jesus being called the begotten Son of God.

Psalms 2:7 "I will declare the decree: The Lord has said to Me, "`You are My Son, Today I have begotten You.

This prophacy is a future event when God the Father rised Jesus from the dead as the firstborn of God from the dead.

Acts 13:33 God hath fulfilled the same unto us their children, in that he hath raised up Jesus again; as it is also written in the second psalm, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee.

Romans 1:4 Who was declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead; even Jesus Christ our Lord.

Many blessings,
John

well as this is a JW thread lets find out what the NWT says and why.

By this the love of God was made manifest in our case, because God sent forth his only-begotten Son into the world that we might gain life through him ........1 John 4;9

"Only-begotten." Gr., mo·no·ge·ne´; Lat., u·ni·ge´ni·tum. getting back to what it should be is the way forward

For God loved the world so much that he gave his only-begotten Son, in order that everyone exercising faith in him might not be destroyed but have everlasting life. John 3;16

Hi May,

Even in John 3:16 we have the added word (begotten). Other versions don't use the word. Many of the translators of of our Bible had a Trinitarian mindset which influenced much of our Bibles. You really have to study the whole Bible in order to sort through all the additions and omissions.

RVS John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

When these verses speak of Jesus being the only Son they are referring to Jesus' uniqueness not that God has no other sons. Even if they were referring to Jesus' begotteness they could be referring to Him coming into the world after His resurrection and not His birth through Mary.

We know from Scripture that Jesus was in fact Michael before He bacame flesh and blood. We also know from Scripture that angels are created beings. With this in mind we can better understand from Scripture that Jesus had two births, one through His mother Mary and one through His resurrection from the dead. Prior to these two births Jesus had no other birth.

When the Bible refers to the only begotteness of Jesus it's referring to His resurrection from the dead where He becomes then only begotten Son and is seated at the right hand of the Father on High in glory.

Jesus’ being called the "only-begotten Son" (Joh 1:14; 3:16, 18; 1Jo 4:9) does not mean that the other spirit creatures produced were not God’s sons, for they are called sons as well. (Ge 6:2, 4; Job 1:6; 2:1; 38:4-7) However, by virtue of his being the sole direct creation of his Father, the firstborn Son was unique, different from all others of God’s sons, all of whom were created or begotten by Jehovah through that firstborn Son. So "the Word" was Jehovah’s "only-begotten Son" in a particular sense, even as Isaac was Abraham’s "only-begotten son" in a particular sense (his father already having another son but not by his wife Sarah).—Heb 11:17; Ge 16:15. Jesus was created by Jehovah alone , all the other things, sons of God ,were created through Jesus . he is unique indeed

yes i totally agree with this ,that is why JW have a bible (NWT)that is a word for word translation , with nothing in it to cloud the original thoughts of God. Many things are being revealed and put right in the time of the end , Jehovah is revealing many things and giving his faithful slaves the responsibily to do this MATTHEW 24;45-47

(Psalm 97:11) Light itself has flashed up for the righteous one, And rejoicing even for the ones upright in heart

And as for you, O Daniel, make secret the words and seal up the book, until the time of [the] end. Many will rove about, and the [true] knowledge will become abundant. .......... and it has , accurate translation being just a part of it ....... the revealing of prophecy another part of it, thrilling times indeed
