I fail to see how a form of vengeful torture (solitary confinement) would benefit anyone, much less democracy in the US.

Nothing vengeful about an appropriate level of punishment by restricting outside communication for a hateful, vengeful, dangerous and impenitent criminal who not only orchestrated a deadly attack but would continue to pose a threat.

In his mind, any amount of punishment is torture. His mind turning to mush is figurative, his own rancor causing it to fester.
