For those out of the loop, he has written the masterful historic/science fiction epic trilogy: the Baroque Cycle, which ties into the present day technological/code-breaking thriller Cryptonomicon. I have also read Reamde, which was another present day tech escapade.
But what has put me over the top is his Anathem.
Anathem is to philosophy and mathematical proofs what Tolkien was to mythology and Asimov to science fiction. I do not make these comparisons lightly. This book has officially made it clear that Stephenson deserves a seat beside these two gods of literature.
And I am only 2/3rds the way through. I don't even know how it ends yet.
But anyway, I really really hope that there are more Stephenson fans out there. And if not, I hope this thread convinces you to read him.
