By RANDALL DICKERSON, Associated Press Randall Dickerson, Associated Press – Fri May 6,

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Two Muslim religious leaders say they were asked to leave a commercial airliner in Memphis on Friday and were told it was because the pilot refused to fly with them aboard.
Masudur Rahman, who is also an adjunct instructor of Arabic at the University of Memphis, said by phone from the terminal at Memphis International Airport that he and another imam had already been allowed to board their Delta Connection flight to Charlotte, N.C., before they were asked to get off the plane. Orthodox Jews Removed From Flight ...no, wait (Atlas Shrugged Article Saturday May 7, 2011)

Nobody cared when the mere presence of Orthodox Jews caused the lockdown of the cockpit of the plane and Airport police escorted the three Jewish men off the plane last month Not even a mere yawn (and it happens a lot, last January a flight out of NY was diverted to Philly because of Jewish men)) but two imams are escorted off a plane in Tennessee and media (who jokes about these Jewish incidents) is blown-back and the Muslim Brotherhood groups (ie CAIR) are preparing for litigation warfare and a public relations blitz. Oh yes, CAIR is going to give all of America "sensitivity" lessons (while pushing for a Ground Zero mosque on hallowed ground.)

Mathematician

Reason, and reason again
From the incident with the Orthodox Jews:

Airline spokeswoman Bobbie Egan says the crew of Flight 241 from Mexico City became alarmed Sunday after the men began the ritual, which involves tying leather straps and small wooden boxes to the body.

Uhhhhh...

"A lot" you say. What is your source?

That's called putting on Tefillin. It is part of a religious Jew's morning ritual.
Yeah, but in an age when a fuss is kicked up about having a bottle of shampoo or funny looking shoes on flights, when someone starts strapping boxes to themselves and you're not familiar with what is happening, it's understandable for you be alarmed I would say.

They should have had the common sense to explain what they were doing first.

Maybe you're right. Then again, maybe they did, and a religious practice the witnesses didn't also engage in offended them.

That doesn't seem likely. Most people aren't that bigoted.
Really now...
I live in NYC, a city with more Jews than Jerusalem, and I've had police attempt to destroy articles that I carried from shul as I went about my day.

So what were their reasons?
They offered no suitable explanation. A kippah is something commonly seen on the street. A siddur is a book, and Tefillin are made of leather(not like I've ever heard of a bomb made of leather and stitched together with thread, but hey, those terrorists must be real crafty, you know?).

Sorry, I'm just trying to get this straight in my head. You're on your way home from shul, and policemen came up to you and what, grabbed the kippah from your head and other stuff from your hands?

Not really. I live on an island. I regularly commute to another island, and I use ferry service to do so. There exists a checkpoint at each ferry terminal.

Oh I see. So they didn't know what they were and told you to hand them over in case they were a security risk?

It's a regular thing to hand over your bags for inspection, but when someone picks up your bag, spreads its contents on a table, then makes the comment, "we're going to have to destroy this", I don't know how to make it seem "nice".

And that happens a lot? Did they say it about all the objects, even the skullcap, or more specifically the Tefillin?
