MS Word and Page Numbering HELP

nutshell

Well-Known Member
OK - I'm writing a paper and I need help with the page numbering.

I have the Table of Contents and other sections before the main piece of the paper. The instructions require that the stuff before the main piece be numbered with Roman numberals (i, ii, iii, iv, v, vi, etc.). The main piece is to be numbered with Arabic? (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, etc.).

How the heck do I do this????!!!!

Inserting page numbers is no problem, but I can't get the first pages to be in Roman numberals and the latter pages in the same document to be "regular" numerals. Whenever I change one in the footer, they all change throughout the document to match.

Help please!:(

Well, this is probably a dumb suggestion, but could you split it into two separate documents, number them separately, print them and just put them together as a single document?

Done here.
1) Go to the end of the last page to be numbered in Roman numerals.

2) Go to Insert ... Break ... and select a section break type that suits you. I usually use "Continuous."

3) Go to the first page to be numbered in Arabic numerals.

4) Go to Insert ... Page Numbers ... Format ...

5) Select the format and click Start at _____. Type 1 into the space.

The crucial part of this is that you have to have a section break in there.

That's what I was going to do, but I want to use Word's "Table of Contents" and "Table of Authorities" feature, which requires everything to be in one doc.

Thanks! I'll give it a shot!
