Mala Prayer beads.

Can some one please direct me to more information on them? I am a bad figiter (is that a word?) and I made myself a string of mala beads from the photos I saw of them and from the little bit of seemingly good information on what they are supposed to look like. But I am not sure if this is an acceptable practice, a good friend of mine reserches prayer beads thorughout history and I plan to commision her to make a nice set for me.

I am trying to meditate and having something to focus my hands on keeps my mind from going haywire. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
