I think that Julian was a great philosopher who just expressed his vision on Christianity, which was a growing religion at that time.
Julian is a defender of the freedom of thought and the freedom of religion. In fact, I completely disagree with the decision of Theodosius in 380 to persecute pagans and heretics.
Christians and Pagans were supposed to live pacifically together; I find the nickname Apostate very offensive, because Julian was a pagan. period.
