Independence for Hong Kong?

The former British colony of Hong Kong was returned to China nearly two decades ago in 1997. Advocacy of independence for Hong Kong has been labelled as subversion and independence advocates as "extremists". In August several thousand protesters took to the streets as part of the city's first independence rally in its history after pro-independence candidates were barred from participating in upcoming elections. Election reforms in 2014-15 allowed for Bejing to screen election candidates and therefore limit opposition.

Admittedly not an issue I am very familiar with, so I'm wondering if any one has any opinions on this?

Here's a cool picture of Hong Kongs skyline just for good measure. :)

Hong Kong is not likely to win independence from China. There was a time when good intelligence and targeted bribing might have worked. China preaches unity and the benefit of being Chinese, but above that preaches China has a mission and a purpose. Letting Hong Kong go or even releasing Taiwan would be hard to explain to the Chinese public.

It is economically beneficial for China to maintain Hong Kong's special status, otherwise, it would have been merged with the main-land long back. Who cares about freedom and democracy?

First...not going to happen. Well, at least not until the Easter Bunny shows up and admits his part in releasing the Loch Ness monster into Loch Ness with the help of Bigfoot, Yeren, the Yeti and a Jackalope

Second, where did that "several thousand protesters" number come from?

The Guardian...

....who linked it to an article citing numbers between 2,000 to 10,000 depending on who you believe.
