Idols! What is it?

Will this work? "An idol is anything that we worship which does not deserve worship." Of course, that raises the question of why something might not deserve worship, doesn't it?

When I think of idols these days, I always think of consumerism and the worship of money. Do you have other idols in mind, Curiousgirl?

american idol? statue idol? i dunno... to a limit people idols are healthy, but over idealing idols are obsessive. statue idols in hinduism represent the gods or goddesses and contain multitudes of symbolism and are used to focus the devotees worship to a diety/God.

i·dol [ d’l ] (plural i·dols)

noun

1. object of adoration: somebody or something greatly and often fanatically admired and loved ( disapproving )

2. religion: object worshiped as god: something such as a statue or carved image that is worshiped as a god

3. religion: forbidden object of worship: in monotheistic religions, any object of worship other than the one God

[13th century. Via French idole from, ultimately, Greek eidōlon “image,” from eidos “form, shape” (source of English idyll and kaleidoscope).]

Very comprehensive. Personally, I've always thought of an idol as an object to which we associate greater meaning or repsect than we would ordinary objects, and that these objects are simply a distillation of our beliefs into a physical point in the universe.

In addition to Maize's answer, (which was good) an idol can be described as a role model on which a person does idolize, say for example:

My little sister's idol is Hilary Duff. So, basically, my sister will try to dress, act, speak or any other action that Hilary Duff may do (god help us).
