How to clean out recyclables?

For example, say you have a jar of peanut butter that's empty but there's still peanut butter on the sides. Or jelly. Or maybe you have a plastic tray from a Chinese place with Sesame Sauce or Orange Chicken Sauce in it.

Do you rinse it out in the sink and dump the water down the drain? Even if you have a sink strainer over your drain, would that necessarily catch the sauce, peanut butter, jelly to prevent it from jamming up down your pipe?

Never had that problem. Any solid bits go in the bin or compost first. Then I wash my recyclables with hot soapy water to make any residue water soluble.
