How long does assimilation take?

Do not conflate assimilation with acceptance. Some of those groups didn't need to assimilate rather the general population stopped treating people like garbage; Irish.

I've heard that the Irish immigrants were hard workers, unbridled in Bar fights, and Catholics. So what is not to like?

America was very anti-Catholic for a good century. Even JFK's fitness for office was questioned based on his Catholicism. The claim was his religion makes him a subject of the Pope thus POTUS is answerable to a foreign authority. A lot of England's views of the Irish were part American culture due to being a colony. A view based on English propaganda. The Irish were once called "The White ******s" (racial word, filter) for two centuries. The Irish didn't need to assimilate. The average citizen got over the BS they were taught and stopped caring about it.
