India's population growth rate slowed from 21.5% for decade 1999-2001 down to 17.6% for 2001-2011 (wikip). The future is in the hands of whoever can guess the future. You have a Dynamics problem. You may be able to project trends ahead of time if you can create accurate enough computer models that identify hidden variables. Its a bit like creating a weather model. You cannot predict everything, but you may find out useful things. For example you may be able to predict if the population is going to shrink or even find triggers to cause it to shrink. You may find out that a river is in the way of improvement or that you need to focus on growing more bananas and fewer strawberries -- something inane that you would not normally spot. You start with past data and build your prediction model using that and try to identify trends and things that cause trends. Who knows. I don't.

No, India isn't a developed country. But a lot of impressive progress has been. So there is good cause for optimism too.
Tryst with the future: Where India will be in another 70 years - CNN

Yes, many impressive progresses have been done. Wasn't it a minister in the Indian government that was elected recently, who comes from the lowest caste or something, which is the first time in the Indian history this happened? Now it's only someone from the casteless part of the population that still needs to be elected to the government.
