The Dutch seem to have it under control now after, for years, producing just tasteless water bombs.
Indeed, they are the leaders. A lot of trial and error, I presume. That's how agriculture has always worked. Dad selected potatoes to keep for seed.

That won't work with many plants you get at the super market. They are hybrids which don't produce offspring that has the same properties as the parent plants.
For sure. It was only a simple illustration of how we've been messing with plants for a long time. Do you think we're in any danger of losing the original genetics because of hybridization? Surely the agriculture experts wouldn't be so foolish as to keep only the mules.

No. The seed companies are guarding their originals good and they are always looking for more diversity.
The trick with hybrids is that the seed usually produces a better, bigger fruit than both of the parents but that property gets lost in later generations (if it is even fertile). So the farmer has to buy new seeds every year and can't breed his own.
