Eh? France still has McD's and similar chains, and other countries still have sit-in restaurants.

Other countries are not the point.

Compared to individual restaurants the big chains such as McDonald's are few and far between. I would guess in the region of thousands to one.

I remember being in paris when the first McDonald's opened. On opening day two tractors drove up through the busy streets and dumped their trailer loads of cow manure at the doors.

Feelings have improved since then and they have become the most popular restaurant in france on an individual basis. But luckily they are so few and far between that their popularity makes little difference.
