For Agnostics: A Response to Tragedy

Whenever there is a mass casualty shooting, deadly act of war, or an analogous form of tragedy, there is energy to do something about it. Most of this energy gets directed at the political level. I want to offer another tool for the agnostic types. It doesn’t require much investment, so it can be supplemented at little personal cost.

It involves relating to God, affirming his sovereignty, and then associating the reality of his sovereignty with the tragedy in an implicit way (without aggressively accusing him). Now, as an agnostic, relating to God is probably not something you ever do. Fortunately, there are plenty of people who do. You can find them relating to God on video with a quick Youtube search.

If you identify with a believer, assuming their mindset, feeling what they feel, then you can create a replica version of a believer within yourself and use it to relate to God. There will be resistance to you doing this. It will feel like you are regressing and you might have a voice in your head discouraging you. Despite this, the anger you feel from observing another tragedy should be strong enough to overcome this resistance. Once the connection to God is established through your makeshift believer, then you affirm his sovereignty over and over, and finally, associate the tragedy with his sovereignty.

This tool doesn’t require money. It costs only a bit of your time and attention.
