“The Lord is kind and merciful, slow to anger and rich in compassion.” (Psalm 103)

READINGS:
l Sir 27,30 28,7
II Rom 14, 7-8
Gospel Mt 18, 21-35

REFLECTION: Mercy is one of those old-fashioned words and it is not used as much today. Words like compassion, understanding, acceptance and love have taken its place. Shakespeare wrote, ”The quality of mercy is not strained, it droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven…” Mercy by nature overflows. Mercy calls us to be all that we are and more. It calls us to forgive not once, not seven times, but seventy times seven. It calls us to be like God, who is kind and merciful, slow to anger and rich in compassion.

PRAYER: Lord God, over and over again, you teach us to show patience, forgiveness and mercy. We have a hard time learning this lesson and ask your help. Show us once again how to let go of demands, how to show mercy to others and to receive it in return. Amen.

FAMILY DISCUSSION:

Monday: As a family talk about one or two areas of life where you all could overlook one another’s’ minor faults.

Tuesday: Today instead of striking back when struck restrain yourself. Make it easy for those who have made it hard on you or who have failed in their responsibility.

Wednesday: As a family pray the Sorrowful Mysteries of the rosary. Reflect on Jesus’ response to those who hurt Him.

Thursday: If you get angry with someone today say to them, ”I feel angry about what you did or said and I think we need to talk about it.”

Friday: Do something or give something to the poor today, realizing the injustices they suffer from individuals and from society.

Saturday: Remember today in your prayers,
Spouses who do not understand each other
Co-workers who fail to help each other
Prisoners who have hurt others
Alcoholics who hurt their families
Parents who fail to love their children

PRAYER: Father, as a family we want to become ever more aware of Your love and forgiveness. You are the source of these gifts. Help us to share them with one another and to realize that what we do to each other we do to you. Give us the courage to have mercy beyond measure. Amen. www.hcfm.org
