Many religions are also wrapped in a culture or way of doing things, I think it is viable to ascribe that religion to oneself if it is descriptive of values or denotes oneself to belonging to a specific group.

I was a regular Baptist churchgoer long before I wass saved. Maaybe he just was avoiding being open because he knew he didn't believe and didn't wish to jeopardize the facade.

Or maybe he honestly felt that a person's personal beliefs were a personal thing to be treasured between them and their god. Not everyone feels the need to broadcast and share their innermost beliefs.
