Catch 22--again--Mercury in Flourescent bulbs disposal hazard

I heard a blurb on the radio this morning driving in and googled it when I got to work.
These articles seem to sum up the issue:

Now I am trying to be more green in my life style--but frankly have not liked the flourescent bulbs I have purchased. They don't seem to shed enought light, the light they put out is dingy or yellowish, and contrary to thier advertising do not last longer than regular bulbs, and they are alot more expensive. I found these articles interesting, because again-while we are all trying to be more aware and more green, it seems more and more often there is a catch 22 involved in the process.

Here's another one: Prius does more environmental damage than Hummer

http://clubs.ccsu.edu/recorder/editorial/editorial_item.asp?NewsID=188

Building a Toyota Prius causes more environmental damage than a Hummer that is on the road for three times longer than a Prius.

When you pool together all the combined energy it takes to drive and build a Toyota Prius, the flagship car of energy fanatics, it takes almost 50 percent more energy than a Hummer - the Prius’s arch nemesis.
