Anti-Porn petition for those so inclined

idea

Question Everything
Can't take the thoughts out of people's heads. This is a slippery slope leading to bans on movies, lyrics, sex toys, it's a dangerous road to walk; messing with people's freedom.

It's not banning anything, it's equivalent to not letting kids go into R rated movies without their parents I think, which is not messing with anyone's freedom at all.

First, define what is porn. Second please tell us why you should get to be the moral police and get to make decisions for the rest of us?

You can define it the same way the movies rate things - and it is not equivalent to "moral police", it's a step towards controlling who can bother you with what (like having the ability to be on the "no call list" or trying to avoid getting junk mail and emails. Time is precious, it would be nice to be able to control - at least within our own property - who can intrude and with what.

Movie ratings, if you pay attention to things that are rated, are often biased, arbitrary, and many times it seems they make them up as they go along(vampire violence, intense scenes of horror, spider horror, I could go on about all the dumb ones I have noticed). So, what is porn?
And you can take steps towards blocking unwanted traffic without the government stepping in to play nanny. I have an addon for Firefox that disables all Javascript unless I ok it, and other addons that block a number of marketing and tracking scripts (it even blocks a few here at RF). You already have the ability to control it, you just have to take responsibility and do it, rather than asking the government to do it for you at the expense of the rights of others.

That's already in existence with SafeSearch (which is on by default in every single search engine I've seen) and Firefox addons. We don't need what this petition is calling for.

Just get a friend to put blocking software on your computer/browser, and have them make up a password you don't know.

Aye, either that or parents could try not leaving their children on the internet unsupervised... but hey, one can dream. ^_^

What makes me laugh is, who bought the kids their Computers? Who actually owns the Computer? Who actually has the power to confiscate the Computer/regulate how it's being used?

The parents!

Not that I'm particularly concerned about the petition, but it would be a little naive to think that a.) parents could maintain any real control of the internet and what their kids are able to do with it, or that b.) denying a child access to the internet is any sort of real option, or that c.) a parent would "supervise" their child for the entirety of the use of the internet.

Yes, there is only so much that can be done. But simple monitoring without any other techniques wouldn't help either, because the kids don't know the reason.

After all, if you make sex evil, you make evil sexy.

In addition to monitoring, I would be letting my kids know that the reason isn't because sex is evil and they shouldn't even know it exists until they're 50 years old, but because it can be tricky to discern what's virus-prone and what isn't.

Once they know how computers and the internet work (which I will be teaching them from a young age), the leash will more or less be off because they'll know the techniques for avoiding viruses, scams, etc, but they'll also have their own computer by then, which won't get replaced if they break it.
