A Special Cat

When my girlfriend of the time and I got a place together, we noticed that there were quite a few stray cats around. Only one was rather noticeable. We called him wildcat. He was very fierce and the other cats, including ours kept out of his way. He seemed to realise that my girlfriend was a little scared of him and sometimes came in when I was not there. On more than one occasion she had to use a stick to push him to the door and he would fight all the way. Privately I quite admired his bravery.

He seemed to tire of us after a while and we did not see him for some weeks. One evening, I came home after being out with friends. My girlfriend was already in bed. She called me and said that wildcat had got in again. She said he is under the bed but there is something wrong with him, his breathing is very wheezy. I looked, but he was not there.

We had a pup now so I went into the living room to make a fuss of her. When I was ready for bed I said to the pup "lie down" and gestured towards her basket. There was wildcat, sitting in the dogs bed looking very frail, so I just went to bed. My girlfriend agreed that we would leave him be.

She got up before me in the morning, just in time to see wildcat walking towards the kitchen escorted by our pup. He left through the cat-flap and we never saw him again.

We both felt very guilty that we had never offered him a little kindness but somehow we felt very moved that he came to us for his last night of life.

Should the cat not have been taken to a vet?

It's available on DVD. If you can't see it on stage its the next best thing.
Thanks Christine, that sounds like a good idea. The truth is that I love the theatre but it has been sometime since I knew anybody remotely interested in it. I would not like to go alone.
