A question for Jewish members:

The Kilted Heathen

Crow FreyjasmaðR
I've been watching through The Strain again (fantastic show, love it), and one of the main characters is Abraham Setrakian, an Armenian Jew. The show (and the books) rely heavily on his religion and heritage, but one thing that constantly reoccurs is Setrakian telling villains that they will "burn in hell" and make mentions to "the Devil".

Are there Jewish sects that include these doctrines, or is this more American media being so saturated with Christianity?

I vote American media saturation etc. Though a modern Jew might be familiar with these concepts and even slip into the vernacular and use them occasionally, it wouldn't be part of a religious person's thinking.

I mainly agree with @rosends, but not being familiar with either the show or the books, nor do I know much about Armenian Jewish traditions, there's always the possibility that the creators did some research and this is something that is somehow based on the Armenian Jewish community's traditions.

The question (IMHO) has to do with the writing of a jewish character. Is the behavior supposed to be an expression of his religious identity (as the shorthand of media charactetrizations often is -- having every aspect be a function of the stressed trait) then that language would be alien to his thinking. if he is just a regular ol' American who speaks loosely and whose words are not necessarily an aspect of his Judaism, he might say all sorts of things.
