A Poem For Covid

I received an email this morning from an unknown sender. Not the usual link with no text or any link at all, not 'Property in Marbella', or 'Erectile Distinction' (its surprising how many of those i receive) so i piqued my interest.

It turned out to be a rather poignant poem that i am sure many will relate to.

I'm normally a social girl
I love to meet my mates
But lately with the virus here
We can't go out the gates.

You see, we are the 'oldies' now
We need to stay inside
If they haven't seen us for a while
They'll think we've upped and died.

They'll never know the things we did
Before we got this old
There wasn't any Facebook
So not everything was told.

We may seem, sweet old ladies,
Who would never be uncouth
But we grew up in the 60s -
If you only knew the truth!

There was sex and drugs and rock 'n roll
The pill and miniskirts
We smoked, we drank, we partied
And were quite outrageous flirts.

Then we settled down, got married
And turned into someone's mum,
Somebody's wife, then nana,
Who on earth did we become?

We didn't mind the change of pace
Because our lives were full
But to bury us before we're dead
Is like a red rag to a bull!

So here you find me stuck inside
For 4 weeks, maybe more
I finally found myself again
Then I had to close the door!

It didn't really bother me
I'd while away the hour
I'd bake for all the family
But I've got no bloody flour!

Now Netflix is just wonderful
I like a gutsy thriller
I'm swooning over Idris
Or some random sexy killer.

At least I've got a stash of booze
For when I'm being idle
There's wine and whiskey, even gin
If I'm feeling suicidal!

So let's all drink to lockdown
To recovery and health
And hope this bloody virus
Doesn't decimate our wealth.

We'll all get through the crisis
And be back to join our mates
Just hoping I'm not far too wide
To fit through the flaming gates

Ring-a-round the pose is a familiar poem to me about the bubonic plague:

"Ring-a-round the rosie,
A pocket full of posies,
Ashes! Ashes!
We all fall down."

The uk version is sneezing

"Ring-a-ring (or round) , the rosie,
A pocket full of posies,
Achoo! Achoo! (Or A tishoo! A tishoo!)
We all fall down.

Ring-a-Ring-a-Roses is all about the Great Plague; the apparent whimsy being a foil for one of London’s most atavistic dreads (thanks to the Black Death). The fatalism of the rhyme is brutal: the roses are a euphemism for deadly rashes, the posies a supposed preventative measure; the a-tishoos pertain to sneezing symptoms, and the implication of everyone falling down is, well, death.

There are several interpretations nothing to do with the plage, it makes an interesting read if you are into folklore

Good poem....really captive of the fluidity of life going on.
But I've been going through this phase since my wife died.
Nothing really changed for me, but I see the problem.
Just wondering who wrote it.....never a clue there.
Where's my mask, where's my beer ?

I have no idea who wrote it I'm afraid

Have a beer for me...

The word `mum` and `nana` denotes UK and transferred thinking.
But...……..no clues

Umm... could you forward some of those 'erectile dysfunction' emails to me?

Asking for a friend.

There are a few other words to indicate the UK, perhaps even the north west but it doesn't get me any closer to the author

I can recommend Edex 30, it may be something of a passion killer but once you are over that little problem, It works
