There are two areas, two main divisions, in the human mind. The lower is what we use every day for ordinary activities. It is a product of the brain through genetics and is modified/fine tuned by our life experiences. The higher mind is nothing to do with the body/personality. It is of the human soul. It is in no way a product of the body. Abstract thinking, intuition and individual consciences are higher mind functions.
There is quite a lot more to all of this but I'll keep it short. In a sense it is akin to psychic pnenomena because of it's manner, the way it works. But it is different. Briefly stated intuition is our ability to interface with our soul on the mental plane of existence. Psychic things are usually he workings of much lower spiritual planes. Is it mental or spiritual. From the question it seems we consider that "mental" means "of the brain". There is another "mental". The spiritual universe consists of many, many planes of existence ("my father's house has many mansions"). The mental plane is one of these. The human soul is made of and exists on the spiritual, mental plane.
Neither "atman, inner-self or subconscious" are terms that apply. If anything we might use the term "super-conscious". But it does not matter how we refer to it, intuition is no more than a means of communication through the medium of mental matter.
Important here is that we must try to differentiate between intuition and psychic doings. They are not the same although the opposite may seem the case. Think in terms of lower and higher and begin to understand this.
