Is saying a dog is "mans best friend" offensive? Sexist?

Why do we say a dog is man's best friend and diamonds are a woman's best friend?

That's like saying dogs can't be a woman's best friend, they want something more expensive

Dogs are huMANities best friend. They've followed along with us for 45,000 years (twice).

On an unrelated note I wonder if it says anything about dogs and cats and percieved cultural gender roles. If it's masculine to expect loyalty, responsiveness to command, and unrequited love, but feminine to appreciate having boundaries, rules of consent, independence, and disreguard of assumed authority.

Another reason why 'crazy cat lady' has been the modern and medieval spinster stereotype.

I remember back (cue old man voice) in the day that only dentists and jewelers
could legally buy gold in the US. Yes, this was a thing, average citizens were prohibited from buying gold. Really. wait, what's the thread about again? Dogs? well, hell, worth their weight in gold F ya.

I don’t see why either should be sexist or offensive. Nowadays people aren’t happy unless they’re offended about something … anything. When I was in high school and college my Siberian Husky was my best friend and buddy. He was my only friend and buddy. I took him almost everywhere I could.

"Man" and "a man" are different usages. "Man", without an article, generally denotes mankind, rather than men as opposed to women.
