The simple fact that they didn't use proper channels going through Mexico legally, sends a strong message that their intentions were likely not to go through proper legal channels here.
How so? Major parts of Mexico aren't exactly safe right now. I wouldn't want to stay there.

As people mentioned this already, they could have just gone to the US consulate and applied properly like so many immigrants have done in the past. It's not like Mexico doesn't have any last time I checked.
Asylum is sought at the US border.

It serves also as a valid reminder to people that Mexico offered to take every one of them in as one of their own. Still I would think Mexico is a step up from Honduras if the rhetoric over how bad it is down there serves as any indicator. It's not like they don't have any real place to go.
"Police commissioner Benjamin Grajeda said that authorities only blocked the highway Saturday to tell people about the government’s offer. “Here in this truck right now you can get help,” he said.

Thousands of migrants in the city of Arriaga rejected the plan Friday night, but said they could be willing to discuss it again once they reach Mexico City. Some fear they will be deported if they take advantage of the program.

The caravan is now trying to strike out for Tapanatepec, about 29 miles (46 kilometers) away after an arduous 60-mile (100 kilometer) journey to the city of Arriaga.

Orbelina Orellana, a migrant from San Pedro Sula, Honduras, said she and her husband left three children behind and had decided to continue north one way or another.

“Our destiny is to get to the border,” Orellana said.

She was suspicious of the government’s proposal and said that some Hondurans who had applied for legal status had already been sent back. Her claims could not be verified, but migrants’ representatives in the talks asked the Mexican government to provide a list of those who had been forced to return.

Mexico’s Interior Ministry said that temporary identity numbers have already been issued to 111 migrants under the “You are home” program. The IDs, called CURPs, authorize the migrants to stay and work in Mexico. The ministry said pregnant women, children and the elderly were among the migrants who had joined the program and are now being attended to at shelters."
Migrant Caravan Continues for U.S. Border After Rejecting Mexico's Offer to Stay

Some stayed, some moved on to try other Mexican cities, while others continued on through.

It's also been mentioned numerous times that you can't. You never could apply for asylum at an embassy or consulate, only at a border checkpoint.

That's really a bunch of BS.
Actually, it's spot on.

"Antisemitism in the United States was also indicated by national public opinion polls taken from the mid nineteen thirties to the late nineteen forties. The results showed that over half the American population saw Jews as greedy and dishonest. These polls also found that many Americans believed that Jews were too powerful in the United States. Similar polls were also taken, one of which posed that 35–40 percent of the population was prepared to accept an anti-Jewish campaign.

In a 1938 poll, approximately 60 percent of the respondents held a low opinion of Jews, labeling them "greedy," "dishonest," and "pushy."[25] 41 percent of respondents agreed that Jews had "too much power in the United States," and this figure rose to 58 percent by 1945. In 1939 a Roper poll found that only thirty-nine percent of Americans felt that Jews should be treated like other people. Fifty-three percent believed that "Jews are different and should be restricted" and ten percent believed that Jews should be deported.[26] Several surveys taken from 1940 to 1946 found that Jews were seen as a greater threat to the welfare of the United States than any other national, religious, or racial group.[27]"

Don't ever forget that North America sent away a boatload of Jewish refugees, many (if not most) of whom ended up in concentration camps and/or dead.

You are partially correct with this in regards to embassy and consulate offices, I stand corrected on that, however this can be done at any USCIS office for foreigners outside the US who meet the terms and definition of refugee.

USCIS field offices are in Mexico.

You can get information and temporary refuge at USCIS offices and they will tell you IF you meet the definition but you cannot apply there, they will still redirect you to a checkpoint.

When it comes to someone who is literally running for their life there should be no limits.
Can't anyone claim they are 'running for their lives'? What exactly makes that phrase appropriate for some people over probably a couple billion other people that live in crap-hole countries and situations? As I said we need limits and rules on asylum seekers.

Anyone can claim it. That's why refugee claimants get hearings to confirm that they really are refugees.

"A couple billion people" wouldn't qualify for refugee status. Globally, there are about 17 million refugees. The vast majority of these are not in the Americas.

America Admits Fewer Refugees as Number Displaced Grows Globally

As I said we need limits and rules on asylum seekers.
Well, we do have rules, but there are only two possible effects of limiting the number of refugees a country will take in:

- other countries will shoulder the burden themselves, or
- people will die.

My country has a tenth of the population of yours, but we've taken in more Syrian refugees than yours has. In terms of helping refugees, the United States punches well below its weight. Your country could increase the number of refugees it takes in many times over perfectly comfortably.

If you were in the position of Turkey, which has taken in 3.5 million refugees from the Syrian conflict, I could understand a concern about how many more people your country could... but even then, the solution isn't to shut people out; the solution is to work in partnership with other countries to share the load.

Do you know how many refugees the US admitted last year? 28,000. Nowhere near what your country should be taking in. It barely qualifies as a good start.

Ports of entry which includes those are ship ports and airport not just a border crossing.

You can get an application at embassies and consulates. Key word is apply ergo processing it. One can have the paper work in hand if they bothered well before reaching a border

How do you limit asylum seekers? Let's say the Canadian Government decided that all Toronto Maple Leaf fans were too stupid to deserve citizenship and tried to murder them. 100,000 flee to the US, where they are told "The limit is 10,000, so the rest of you are in no danger"? Seriously?

Perhaps they have all done this. Or perhaps some of them have done this. We won’t know until they get to the border and are processed.

I think it's more "the limit is 10,000, so screw the rest of you."

It was 57k.
"President Trump had to battle the courts and vocal opposition, but by the end of the year, he was able to slash refugee admissions into the United States to historic lows.

From Inauguration Day to Dec. 31, his administration accepted 29,022 refugees, the lowest number since at least 2002, according to State Department data. Comparable figures before then are not available."
