Prominent Christian Leaders Blame Pagans, Gays and others for 9/11 attacks

9/11 reminded some of us that we are viewed as the enemy by some within our own country.

During
a September 13, 2001 appearance by Jerry Falwell on the Christian Broadcasting Network's TV program "700 Club," hosted by Pat Robertson, the following exchange occurred:

JERRY FALWELL: I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People For the American Way -- all of them who have tried to secularize America -- I point the finger in their face and say "you helped this happen."

PAT ROBERTSON: Well, I totally concur...

those people deserve to have their blood spilled. (NOTE: this does not mean killing them)

I would disagree, at least as a Pagan. One of the special things that has been given to us as members of an 'alternate' religion is that we are able to have empathy for those that have been misguided into believing our religion is something other than what it is, either by themselves or by others. I am saddened that this happens, but- as I imagine others might agree- far too much blood has been spilled on this day in history and because of this day to do so over mere words.

These two are so embarassing. They have no idea what a bad name they bring to Christianity.

Even during the years when I was very involved with my church teaching Sunday school, serving on several committees and reading the bible nearly every day, I thought these two were morons.

I think the only way to get visible "Christian" spokespeople like these to quit slandering and making fools of themselves and the religion they supposedly serve is for other Christians to write them, phone them or do whatever it takes to bring it to their attention that they are acting like idiots. I don't think they'd listen to gays as closely as they would other Christians who point out their flawed proclamations.

I would advice Christians who disagree with their viewpoints to contact their offices when episodes like this happen.

The title of your thread is misleading. I don't believe many Christians on the RF would consider those two prominent leaders. If they're out there I encourage them to speak up and let the rest of us know what they think.

I have long suspected Falwell and Robertson secretly lust to have each other's love child and their mutual frustration at not being able to accounts for their cranky old natures.

I don't generally endorse guys like Falwell and Robertson but in this forum, those guys need an advocate to make the discussion more interesting. For that purpose, I will be the "Devil's advocate" here:

PERHAPS Robertson and Falwell believe that God is sovereign over everything that happens... (He doesn't do allow things to happen arbitrarily.) God doesn't just allow "innocent" people to die for no reason. He has the ability to protect people from evil if He chooses.
He chose not to protect them that time.
So, there must be some divine reason for 9/11...
What could that reason be? Hmm... Maybe it's America's general disobedience against God. For Falwell and Robertson, that disobedience is most clearly apparent in the sins they cited. I think that they believe that bad things DON'T happen to good people (for no Divine reason).

That might be why they say the stuff like that.

The Southern Baptist Church has, according to wikipedia, 16.3 million members making it the largest Protestant organisation in America.

Jerry Falwell has a 24000 strong congregation. Pat Robertson's show is viewed by an average of 1 million viewers per day.

Now "prominent" is a relative term and so it will mean different things to different people. However, given these statistics, what would be a more accurate description of these two men with regards to their Christian leadership?

I guess now that he's done with the Teletubbies and Sponge Bob he's going to tackle the terrorists. Sorry to tell you, Falwell, they're not stupid enough to think you have a direct line to God largely because they're stupid enough to think they do. I do hope you cross paths, though. ;)
