India's Modi appalled by temple built to worship him

India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi is appalled and made his feelings public when he found out that some supporters built a Hindu Temple with his likeness as the Idol for worship in Rajkot, Gujarat India. The Modi Murti or deity is seated:

"I was appalled," Modi said. "This is shocking and against India's great traditions."

Some are now considering replacing the Modi murti with a traditional Hindu devata murti. However some are ignoring Modi's objections. I guess they do not consider the words of this new Hindu God not as good as his own words to remove it from worship.

What do you think? I find this horrible, I do not like those who put up idols of Gandhi and worship that either. I feel bad for Modi, he is not very happy with this. His request to have it removed should be honored, it is in fact only adding fuel to the fire for his detractors and upstarts.

It's not even a very good likeness, IMHO.

I think his request to have it removed should be honored. And, his other request to make it a temple dedicated to Maa Bharati instead, should also be honored.

namaskaram , ....

No , No , shock horror !!!, ..no I do not like ! .... it and for modi too this must be juat a little disturbing , .....

but there is some big missunderstanding going on here , ......

That's India for you, pray to anything.

it is not so much 'Pray to' , ...but it is 'Pay Respects' to , ...after all what is realy hapening , ...what are the Indian minds thinking ? ...here is a man in which they place great hopes , he is their representative , ...for them to honnour him and to pay respects this is in some way understandable , ...but we must not confuse praying to God , ..and praying to Gods servant in the secular world to be the same thing , .....

Well this is just an outrage. I went to India and I was a huge hit and no one made a temple for me. I'm going to register a formal complaint with...with...Modi? hmm.

(I'm teasing of course)

In all seriousness - if it were me I would be really uncomfortable about it too. If they didn't honor my wish to remove it I might even go down there myself and deal with it.

I see nothing wrong in choosing a human person for worship even when he is alive. It is called love and reverence. If some people have seen godly attributes in Narendra Modi who can say that they should not express their feelings in this way. Was not Mahatma Gandhi revered like this even when he was alive, and do not many acharya's have great following in India even today? After all Narendra Modi has won a landslide election victory.

It can only do good because it should make Narendra Modi think very carefully about his actions in government in that the people are looking for inspirational leadership. Of course, he has done the right thing by saying that this kind of worship is not acceptable to him.

He isn´t a Self Realized master. And even then it is different to commemorate someone in a temple compared to turning people in to Murtis.
No I do not like this.

Hinduism gets enough of a bad rap as it is. This isn´t going to help.

Also, having a revered image of someone while they are alive is too close for comfort to the way tyrannical dictatorships like North Korea try to turn their rulers into living Gods. It creates a recipe for fear in one case and all it can do to the person who is being idolized is risk bloating their ego.

The main point is, Modi doesn't want this so it should be chaged into a temple to Mother India...

I was actually in a temple to Mother India in India, it was very nice and had motifs of Ram leela.

Now I like how he (Modi) auctioned off all the "gifts" Obama gave him recently, and he also auctioned off his pin-striped suit, to charity... Actually, I am thinking of buying some Modi related collectables on eBay .... historical and later be worth 100 times as much. No I am not being greedy, i just like holding a tiny part of history in my hand. I have a Gandhi postage stamp of a certain color that is now worth money. But I am not a big Gandhi fan.

... by the way, the auction of the suit and the Obama gifts was all money raised in the auction to be used to clean up the polluted Ganges River.

I find this horrible, ..
In that case, kindly never visit Tamilnadu where they have temples for politicians and actors, Ramaswamy Naicker, Annadorai, Kamaraja, M.G. Ramachandran, Karunanidhi, and Jailalitha, in addition to Shivaji Ganeshan, Rajnikanth. And not Mumbai, Indore, where they have temples for Sachin Tendulkar, the cricketer.
Crazy stuff, but it wouldn't be the first time a person slowly turned into a God.
Modi is yet far from that stature. He has the promise, but he has to prove it.

The pin-stripe suit sold for some 700,000 USD. The money goes to Ganga cleaning.

Al Beruni, who visited India a thousand years ago made this observation - "It is evident that the first cause of idolatry was the desire of commemorating the dead and of consoling the living’ but on this basis it has developed and has finally become a foul and pernicious abuse.".

However, it should be noted that he was a Muslim and may have held a strong bias against idol worship, which may have influenced his views.

Yes, Shiva, Al-Beruni is not relevant to Hinduism nor is Madame Blavatsky or other such people. We have our own people to comment on things.
