Think of it like a family. I love my mother more than anything else in the world. If she asked me to do something for her and I had to "put aside" my own feelings to do it.

Then so be it.
My family has never asked me to set aside my ethics to obtain anything.

I still don`t get it.

I dislike the Catholic Church and would have enjoyed yet another scandal.

:)
Blunt is a good word. I am sorry that you dislike (thank you for not using hate) the Catholic Church. I really am. I am more sorry that you would wish a bad thing on anyone. Isn't that a bit harsh?

It depends on your point of view.
I haven`t wished any bad thing on anyone.

I truly believe the weakening of the Catholic Church is a good thing for all mankind.
If you want to take into consideration the evils it has committed and abeited in the past 2000 years you can see how opposition to the church can be considered good.

Before you pull the speck out of your brother's eye, first pull the log out of your own eye!
I`m sorry Doc, maybe you should clarify that.
Excatly whose "log" are you speaking of?

There is very much an atheist desire and hope that religion will be practised by individuals. Any religious or religion that needs to force society into one of the conflicting models of religion is ultimately un-democratic.

First, religion is not a democracy. As far as forms of government go, Plato holds there are 5 functional forms of government. Monarchy, Oligarcy, Timocracy, Democracy, Tyranny, in that order.

Second, I can only speak for the Catholic Church, but they do not force society or anyone into doing anything. They merely present the truth, the truth that will ultimately lead people to happiness. If people don't follow, the Church doesn't knock on their door and punch them in the face... that is free will.

If your close family member, someone whose opinion you trusted, said, "I know you, and this is not you, this is not going to help you, it will only hurt you", would you atleast reflect on their advice?

This has happened often.
You cannot be an open atheist in a Catholic family and not hear that statement.

The point is that I had to consider their concern was rooted in their insupportable religious beliefs and then .

I also had to consider that they didn`t know me considering a stance that is central in my person is something they said wasn`t me.

The short of it..yes you should consider what those who love you tell you but you should take into consideration their alterior motives as well and then decide.

If I may ask, what is that cental stance to your person? Did you try to openly communicate it to your family? How was their reception (ie. did they ignore it?)
