Favorite modern teachers

Who are your favorite modern day Buddhist teachers? By modern, I'm including the last century, so 1901 to today.

Personally, I'm a really big fan of Thich Naht Hanh. I also really like Thanissaro Bhikhu.

Im a fan of Buddhadasa, Shunryu Suzuki Roshi and Chogyam Trungpa. Also, they each conveniently represent a different tradition :D

Buddhadasa and Suzuki as well. :0)

Suzuki's dharma heir David Chadwick as well as people like Brad Warner and Alan Watts rounds out my list.

Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, Dudjom Rinpoche, Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse Rinpoche, The Dalai Lama, Robina Courtin, and of course my own teachers, Kenchen Palden Sherab Rinpoche and Tsewang Dongyal Rinpoche.

I also like Alan Watts and Thich Nhat Hanh.

Could list others, but they aren't Buddhist. Wei Wu Wei - possibly but maybe he was Taoist.

Thich Nhat Hanh, HHDL, some of Alan Watts's writings. The Book Against Taboos on Knowing Who You Are sucked. Towards the middle it became a diatribe against modern society.

Dainin Katagiri Roshi was the abbot of one of my first sanghas so I have come to particularly appreciate his teachings. Also, the teachings of Sayadaw U Tejaniya were recently introduced to me on retreat and have played an important role in my recent practice. Additional modern teachers I find inspiring are Zhèngyán Fǎshī and Yìnshùn Dǎoshī, among many others.

The nun/teacher whom I took my precepts under was a student of Katagiri Roshi.

Ooh, that just reminded me, I actually met his wife, Tomoe Katagiri during a retreat; she taught us how to sew rakusus. She was a very nice, tiny woman :D. She also sat with us during sitting periods.

Very nice. The teachers I have had in Soto Zen have all been transmitted Dharma heirs of Katagiri Roshi. An inspirational bunch. :)

I also have a soft spot in my heart for the Dalai Lama, whom I've met in person twice - once in a larger setting complete with Medicine Buddha empowerments and once with a private audience. In fact, his book The Universe in a Single Atom was inspiration for my choice of career paths. Highly recommended for those interested in the intersection between contemplative traditions and science of mind.

Does Ken Wilber count? He's seriously made Buddhism about 100x easier for my western empiricist mind to grapple.
