They don't have to be Christian for membership though. They just tend to be.

Masons are not necessarily Christian. However, I do not see why it could not be considered a religion. It is a secret society type organization with rituals and beliefs unique to Freemasonry. That is up to them though, if they do not want to be labeled a religion, there is no need to do so.

From what I know (admittedly not much) on Masons but to join they must believe in a higher being therefore perhaps it is a form of religion? First part of their initiation includes taking an oath to declare they believe in a higher being.

Calling belief in a higher power the deciding factor in religion rejects a few religions from the accepted definition.

It's also on par with saying atheism or theism alone in a religion.

Perhaps my definition wasn't the greatest but the point does still stand that a person must have a belief system as far as I know (I did admit my knowledge of masons is limited) but I did just check it out and found this:

Freemasonry is a voluntary, fraternal organization, composed of men of good will, good character and good reputation, whom in most jurisdictions around the world, believe in an Almighty Creator and practice the spirit of universal brotherhood to man.

Source: HOW TO BECOME A FREE MASON - Joining the Masonic fraternity.

I still do think of it very much as a fraternity as that is exactly what it is but as Holyshine said they do have their own bible, so I do think that the question they asked was valid as it does have cross over into religion, the base of their bible is from the KJV.

I don't honestly know enough about it to say. However, if it is a system of belief whose purpose is to provide meaning, truths, and guidance in life, then sure?

You've gotta be kidding. The Illuminati and Masons could be both categorized as secretive, enlightenment seeking groups but that's about it. The Illuminati is extinct but there are theories Masonry stemmed out from it. There is nothing evil about either group except from a Christian authorty's perspective: the Illuminati sought actual enlightenmnet and that was against the Church who wished to hide any spiritually liberating knowledge. To call jay z Illuminati is insulting, he is an idiot who thinks he is awesome.

Illuminati is freemasons bro.. neither if which worship the devil... thats all

Yeah... I never do this but I'd like to see your sources please, because that is an incorrect accusation. The Masons may be tied to the Illuminati, but that does not make them the same. And either way, why does that matter? An open group of people interested in esoteric knowledge is not harmful, nor concern with you or others. If you are worried about secret societies, be worried about the ones we don't know exist!
