That's right. Don't ask Aqualung, the conveeerrrttt. She wouldn't know! :biglaugh:
Oh, no! That's not why. It doesn't matter that you're the conveeerrrttt! It's because you say "me and jonny." :biglaugh:

My biggest grammar pet peeve is when people correct my grammar. :)

My grandma always used to give us a hard time about using got instead of have. I don't know why. Isn't "I don't got one" a proper sentence?

Is this thread supposed to motivate me to spell check and proofread my posts?!? I don't got enough time to read everything twice. :)

Namaste Katzpur,

Generally I don't think I'm guilty of any of your pet peeves except the the first one, and I am aware that it's gramatically incorrect but occasionally do it anyway.

1. People use the words "they" and "them"(i.e. third person plural) when they should use the words "he" and "him" (i.e. third person singular). For example:

Wrong: "If a person reads the Bible every day, they'll learn what God expects of them."
Right: "If a person reads the Bible every day, he'll learn what God expects of him."
I will use "they" sometimes because it's gender neutral.

Granted, I could say, "If a person reads the Bible every day, he or she will learn what God expects of him or her." But that's kinda clunky. (And yes, I know I'm not supposed to start sentences with a "but." But I do it anyway. :D And yes, I know that kinda is not a word.)

Also granted that I could say, "If people read the Bible every day, they'll learn what God expects of them." But sometimes I really want to be speaking in the singular.

So I end up with, "If a person reads the Bible every day, they'll learn what God expects of them."

I guess what I'm trying to say is that we need a gender neutral pronoun that still implies personhood. "It" isn't it. I run into the same trouble with God. In my conception of God, God is not male. Yet the only way to avoid implying that God is male is to never refer to God with a pronoun. So instead of saying "Himself" I say "Godself." Instead of saying "His" I say "God's." But that gets a little tedious too, and impersonal. I've always thought that God should have Hir own pronoun, reserved specifically for Hir.

I can't stand it when people spell things wrong, abbreviate, or forget to use capitals at the beginning of the sentance and improper punctuation.

Did I spell beginning wrong? (No joke, I seriously don't know how to spell that)

Hmmmmm.........

I had an english teacher (of all the teachers to do it) when I was in my last year of high school who would say,'Impformation' instead of 'Information'. Every time she said it I thought,'What the hell is that, something you find Imp soldiers marching in?!'

I have many of the same peeves as people have already posted. Unfortunately, I know I am also guilty of doing things that peeve others. I probably make 100 grammatical and punctuation errors each time I post. I know I use words that aren't real, such as "kinda" and "sorta", and "cause" instead of "because"; but for some reason "irregardless" really annoys me. And I know I tend to go overboard in the use of elipses (...) when I'm rambling away trying to sort out the thoughts in my brain. And I know you're not supposed to start sentences with "and" or "but", but I do it all the time.

The apostrophe thing annoys me (especially in regards to "it's" and "its"), although I know I get it wrong myself sometimes. Improper use of capital letters within a sentence, or lack of them at the beginning of a sentence really bugs me (although it doesn't bother me in IM or chat, only when people actually post in a more formal setting such as a forum). Another thing that gets me is people mixing up their/there/they're; whether/weather/wether; and effect/affect. Although I must admit that the whole who/whom/who's/whose thing confuses me entirely. It annoys me when people confuse "then" and "than", usually because of the way they pronounce the words. Oh, and spelling - I always notice that. I'm a compulsive editor, even if I only do it in my brain.

lilithu ~ "Misunderestimate"? Are you serious?? :biglaugh:

Michel ~ I don't know if it has always been the case, but here the inflection is on the third syllable of "controversy" as well. Quite honestly I think it sounds like you've got a stick up your bum if you say it with the inflection on the second syllable. Sorry. :p (BTW, I didn't know that "inflection" could also be spelt "inflexion" until I pulled out my trusty dictionary just now to check.)

Katzpur ~ I use the third person plural for the same reasons lilithu posted (although I'm sure sometimes I just stuff it up). It can be especially difficult to avoid using it in a place such as this, where many people keep their gender anonymous.
I remember it being drummed into me at school how to work out when to use "me" and "I" in the situations you posted. You take out the other person, and read the sentence again; if it sounds weird (e.g. "Me answer questions about LDS doctrine"), then you know you've got it wrong. Although I know I am probably guilty of your last example in #2.

Christiangirl0909 ~ No, you didn't spell "beginning" wrong; you did, however, spell "sentence" wrong. Since you asked. ;)

I'll just shut up now...

I just thought of my biggest English pet peeve (which I am guilty of sometimes i have to admit).

It's pretty close to Katzpur's, but it is people who refer to a business with a plural pronoun.
BAD Example: Religious forums emailed me and said they would...
GOOD Example: Religious forums emailed me and said it would...

The sentences don't make sense, but you get the idea.

Oh, and I also hate it when people say "idear" instead of "idea" :)

bastet, you say you are guilty of using cause instead of because. At least you aren't using cuz or coz or anything like that. I hate that! YOu're abreviating because, for crying out loud, not making up new words!

I also say "cause" instead of "because" sometimes. I also say "pry" instead of "probably". I don't know where that one came from. All the kids in my family say it so we must have picked it up somewhere.

Ah, America's dear president.... "They misunderestimate me." Misunderestimating a person does not make us a hopefuller country. Indeed, we must make the pie higher!

Here's one of my all-time favorite poems- one that's comprised entirely of Bush quotes. I found the online version here.

I think we all agree, the past is over.
This is still a dangerous world.
It's a world of madmen and uncertainty
and potential mental losses.

Rarely is the question asked
Is our children learning?
Will the highways of the Internet become more few?
How many hands have I shaked?

They misunderestimate me.
I am a pitbull on the pantleg of opportunity.
I know that the human being and the fish can coexist.
Families is where our nation finds hope, where our wings take dream.

Put food on your family!
Knock down the tollbooth!
Vulcanize society!
Make the pie higher! Make the pie higher!

Oh, I always say cause. And what to you mean pry? How do you pronounce it?

Just like you would "pry" something out. The funny thing is that no one really notices (or they don't say anything if they do). It just sounds like I'm saying probably really fast.

Editted to say: Curses! I was trying to frubal you in return for the giggle, but I've maxed them out at the moment. I'll be back, though!

Oh, you've just reminded me of something I really, really hate! That bloody abbreviating nonsense that stemmed from mobile phone texting, that mixes letters and numbers. :banghead3 "Str8", "gr8", "L8r", "ne1", "2day", etc. are not words!! If people are trying to save on time, do they not realise that if they've got the 'dictionary' setting activated, then it's actually quicker to type the whole word (and have the dictionary automatically spell it so they don't have to scroll through the letters for each key), than it is to press and hold down the # key to change from letters to numbers to do the bastardized abbreviated version? :bonk: Drives me nuts.

Ah, Feathers! :biglaugh: I think I shall claim "Make the pie higher!" as my new catchphrase...I'll throw it willy-nilly into conversations whenever there is an appropriate (or inappropriate) pause. :p

I find that shouting it randomly into conversations and then pretending you didn't say anything afterward really confuses people. Which is why I love doing it! :D
