"Just because.... doesn't mean ....."

"Just because it's enjoyable, doesn't mean it's right."
"Just because you don't believe it, doesn't mean it isn't true."
"Just because ..... doesn't mean ....."

This template is used ad nausium in all sorts of threads, but it's almost always superfluous. Unless someone has been foolish enough to actually suggest that "if something is enjoyable, that means it's right" or "if I don't believe in it, that means it isn't true," the "Just because...doesn't mean..." argument is self-serving and unhelpful. After all, the corollary is usually true as well, so someone could say "Oh yeah? Well just because you believe in it, doesn't mean it's true, either," and we're back to square one.

So pleeeeease stop using this template for your arguments, people, unless (as I said earlier) someone has actually suggested something as ridiculous as "Just because I don't believe in it, that means it isn't true." :bonk:

Am I right or am I missing something?

Just because you find a particular template irritating doesn'y mean that we should stop using it.
:biglaugh: Just because we stop using it doesn't mean you'll suddenly be the happiest man alive

:biglaugh: Hey , where is my frudal button ? Someone seems to have hijacked it . :149:

But I agree Mr. Sprinkles . Just because tends to leave to rather weak arguements . However , just because I do believe in something does make it true ... for me at lest . ;) Truth does tend to be very subjective , doesn't it ?

I think you hit the nail on the head, and may I add a couple more? :D

Just because it's posted on the internet doesn't mean it's true.
Just because it's not consistent with what you already know to be true, doesn't mean it's false.:p

I agree with you Spinks but I think you are missing the point of why such a thing is said.

When I use that template, I am not trying to state that the other person has attempted to do anything. What I am trying to do is encourage them to substantiated what I view as baseless claims.

Besides, a significant portion of the time all I am trying to do is to get things back to square one. Square one is not a negative thing to be at, in my opinion. So the retort you suggested would be expected and hoped for half of the time with me since it brings me into complete objective agreement with the other person.

Good gods, Spinks, next thing you'll be wanting us to debate using logical and reasoned arguments instead of hysterical pleas to the emotions.
Are you quite insane?!:areyoucra
