I know absolutely nothing about it, however, I would be curious to find out what your research on the subject reveals.

In other words, would you be willing to do the work for my personal and professional benefit, thanks.

Just kidding.

I too have material that I would someday like to get published. Mine is currently still in the working stages. I was planning on going the traditional route: sending out multiple manuscripts to literary agents and maybe some directly to publishers. My material is cheap dime store, swords-and-sorcery fantasy fiction. And I have done some research into that particular genre and market. It is a bit more receptive to new and unpublished authors than many others. Probably because many of the fantasy publishers like TOR and Del Rey are willing to publish any kind of trash that lands on their desks. Ahh, just kidding about that too. They do have some standards, I suppose.

But anyway, I am curious about self-publishing as a possible alternative to the old school method of getting a foot in the door. If I stumble across any good info on it, I will post something here.

Good luck, by the way.

Done here.
I've considered it, because it seems more economical than trying use conventional publishing (self- or otherwise) to publish small runs of genealogical material. However, I haven't actually done it. When I did my research a couple years ago I thought Lulu was the best option, but I haven't kept informed about what's gone on since then.

One thing to be prepared for is that none of them seem to produce really first-rate paperbacks. The covers tend to curl and the bindings can't stand up to much abuse. But then I was spoiled by the History Book Club, which -- at least when I belonged to it -- sold the highest-quality paperbacks I've ever seen.

I have a friend who self-published a book. I will ask him how he did it. I've done so with a couple of books on magic, but I did those in ebook form and sold them through Ebay, until I got some reviews, and then they were picked up by some magic companies for a limited run.

interesting thanks falling...

Amazon also has their own company that will publish your stuff for free, the advantage being it features free ISBN for your book...
