Hell?

Do you believe in a hell? If so, who do you think is going there. Are there people out there that think you don't need a specific religion to not go to hell.

Or, just give your reasoning if you think there isnt a hell.

My personal opinion is that there isnt one. . . but thats just my thoughts.

I believe that if there is a hell, then its just death, not eternal pain.

I believe that the notion of hell was invented to keep the common folk in line. Before we had an organized set-up for police and legal systems, the church was an important factor in deterring crime. If the common folk were told that stealing, for example, would buy a ticket to hell, then many would be discouraged from stealing. This method works especially well if you initiate it at a young age.

I believe heaven and hell are mental states people are in whilst alive; unfortunately, I've spent far too much time in hell - I want to have a go at 'heaven'!!!I want I want I want!!!

:biglaugh: - sad thing is, I'm saying what I really believe!

Hell

Definition: The word "hell" is found in many Bible translations. In the same verses other translations read "the grave," "the world of the dead," and so forth. Other Bibles simply transliterate the original-language words that are sometimes rendered "hell"; that is, they express them with the letters of our alphabet but leave the words untranslated. What are those words? The Hebrew she’ohl´ and its Greek equivalent hai´des, which refer, not to an individual burial place, but to the common grave of dead mankind; also the Greek ge´en·na, which is used as a symbol of eternal destruction. However, both in Christendom and in many non-Christian religions it is taught that hell is a place inhabited by demons and where the wicked, after death, are punished (and some believe that this is with torment)

Gehinnom

Only the very righteous go directly to Gan Eden. The average person descends to a place of punishment and/or purification, generally referred to as Gehinnom (guh-hee-NOHM) (in Yiddish, Gehenna), but sometimes as She'ol or by other names. According to one mystical view, every sin we commit creates an angel of destruction (a demon), and after we die we are punished by the very demons that we created. Some views see Gehinnom as one of severe punishment, a bit like the Christian Hell of fire and brimstone. Other sources merely see it as a time when we can see the actions of our lives objectively, see the harm that we have done and the opportunities we missed, and experience remorse for our actions. The period of time in Gehinnom does not exceed 12 months, and then ascends to take his place on Olam Ha-Ba.

Nope, in my faith Creator doesn't punish his children for being children. Eternal punnishment for temporal mistakes is a bit harsh. ;)

hell is probably a state of mind. something we perhaps go through now as a concequence of built up negative karma.

and heaven would be the opposite.

I know this has nothing to do with the topic of this thread.....but I'm searching for this jehovah's witness that had created a thread (a couple of months ago) where people asked about the beliefs of Jws. Anyone know who I'm talking about?

If there is one then it proves how "merciful" God is...
God is truly merciful when one repents from his/her mistakes and then reforms. However there are people who never repents and or never reforms despite the knowing that deeply inside he/she has done something wrong. This type of person is the one that deserves hell.

according to christians we're all going to hell and ive heard some christian say that the catholics are too? does it make sense. i would think if its true it would be reversed and those who cling to belief are so afraid of hell they have created a personal fear in their life that must be hell.
man was capable of policing society with force and slavery but it was easier to lead the people with fear of the church without a rising reaction from them.conformity insured the rulers prosperity. the fear of death and going to hell for eternity was worth a million lifetimes in prison or enslaved. noone was afraid of death. hell wasnt created to keep people from doing bad things.
it was created so the church could control everyone. dont do this or that because you'll go to hell really meant, you might catch on that you are being duped in being our financial supporters, soldiers of war, societal zombies.

In my particular form of Buddhism, hell (and heaven for that matter) exist right here, on this earth , in this lifetime. You can easily see people in various states of hell, and heaven, all around you. You yourself may move between these states and 8 others many times during the day.

Some Buddhist teachings mention falling into hell, but this is to indicate that the next lifetime for that person may be predominantly hellish.
